My DH and I were talking about it lately, and we might consider sometime in the future, when we have children. I guess it would be nice to get away form NY, send the kids to a good school that doesn't cost a fortune and live in a nice house that doesn't cost half a million! But also, it's such a scarry thing to do! Here we already have jobs, friends, family, we are ina familiar environment! We would have to find jobs first wherever it is we woudl be moving to! how do you look for jobs and settle in a home across country? Please, share you experiences with me! Thank you!

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
We have a few friends who are moving out of state. They are taking trips back and forth to look for houses and will probably take a job transfer when they are ready to move.

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
we are moving to FL. We have had a battle plan for about a year. We are taking it all one step at a time. We started to ship things to FL to be put in storage, we know the house we want built, etc...
I am excited to be going to another state and having a house. I am a little nervous about the move and leaving but in the end everyone will always be welcomed in my home and I am just an email or phone call away

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
The only time I moved to another state was when I went to school in California. After school I stayed for a little while, but I wanted to come back here. I missed NY so much!! I don't know if I would ever move out of state again until we retire or if my whole family came with me

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
Hi! JT and I moved to MA last year, and although it is not that far away, it's like being in another world at times. We both like the pace of life on LI, and even in Boston, nothing moves like it does here. It was actually MORE expensive to live there than it was to live here. We paid a ridiculous amount in rent and that was 40 minutes SOUTH of Boston. We couldn't even begin to afford something decent any closer. I, personally, am very close with my family, and we decided it is not what we really wanted after all, since we were so homesick. Although it's nice to make new friends, etc in a new place, it really stinks not having family there. We cut out time there down from 2-3 years to a year and a half, and I hated it so much I moved back before he even did. JT will be moving home in December. I just could not do it. BUT PLEASE DON'T LET THAT DISCOURAGE YOU! You should DEFINITELY try it if it is what you truely want! Good luck!

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
I moved to Virginia about 4 years ago (I'm from Long Island). I moved because I got a job through an old friend of mine. FH moved here almost 2 years ago for the same reason. You just have to start doing some searching around, asking questions, getting your resume' out there. Look on monster.com or the other career websites and search for jobs in other states that way.
Visit places if you can to see if you'll like living there. Check out the cost of real estate, see what the schools are like.
Good luck!

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
i moved to md from li for graduate school. as far as my education is concerned the move was good for me, but other than that i've hated it. i hate maryland with a passion. the traffic is horrible (and you guys think ny is bad ha, ha), every road is like a six lane highway, and there's nothing quaint or charming. now there are nicer parts of md like further north than the dc suburbs and also further south.
anyway, i moved to va once i finished school which was basically just crossing the potomac. and although i like alexandria better, i still love ny. whenever i drive home i just get this feeling of peace when i see the manhattan skyline and cross one of the bridges onto li. it's like i know i'm home.
i've also hated being so far from my family b/c i moved here not knowing anybody and as i'm sure some of you know it's really hard to make friends!
but if you think you want to move, give it a shot. living in another part of the country can be a really fun experience and eye opening as well. and i'm sure for lots of people it works out just fine. but for me, no.
as far as finding a place to live etc i used online apartment sites and then took a few trips down here to look at them. it wasn't that hard.
good luck!

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
When I get married I'll be living in NJ and that is far enough for me!!!! We'll be close to his parents, but SO FAR from mine Luckily we've all gotten used to it because FH lives out in Jersey! It's really scary moving - I've been in Queens my whole life! But we'll see how it goes!

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
I moved from MA to NY right after I finished college and I absolutely LOVE it. I hate going back to MA... I only go to visit my sister about once or twice a year. I'm not big on seeing my family so that wasn't a problem... and making friends was relatively easy!
So I say... give it a shot... you'll never know unless you give it a try!

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
The best thing I ever did was get out of Long Island. I moved from Manhattan to Virginia in 1996...where I re-met my now-husband (we actually went to college together but didn't date then), bought a great house, and found a good job and an amazing circle of friends. My high school best friend/MOH even ended up moving down here too. The key for me was finding a place where I could truly be comfortable but at the same time would be not too far from NY if I wanted to visit my folks or friends back there. Here, I can drive it or fly Southwest.
Of course, it's different for everyone. For you, you may not enjoy living anywhere other than NY, but for me it's been a great experience. I say, you don't know until you try, so give it a shot!!
Whatever you decide to do, GOOD LUCK!

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
I just moved last month to St Louis. It was hard to leave New York but I got a great job and I was tired of the city. The people out here are so friendly, there is so much to do, it is much cheaper to live and it is a great place to raise a family. I moved out here to be with my FI but he also had the choice to move to NY. We just decided we would have a much better life out here. The way I see it, NY is just a plane trip away. I can always go home. I love meeting new people and this is a true adventure
I just moved to CA this spring...and we are loving it...
we talked about it for a long time, but DH couldn't quit his job (he would lose his stock options), so when he was laid off (keeping his options) we knew the time was right.
I wish I could say that everything is cheaper...but most things are (unfortunately housing is not)
since we moved to a highly desirable location, we needed a local address to put on resumes (many companies don't want to pay relocation fees, since there are planty of local candidates) so we used a friends address in LA...DH also flew out for some job fairs and interviews...
try to figure out where you want to live then search for the newspaper online and look through the classifieds...
as for family and friends...that was tough...but we've had visitors already and more are planned...we are further from my family but now closer to DH's fam...so its a trade off...

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
we're in CA right now, but planning our eventual return to NY (or east coast). Al moved to CA to go to grad school at Stanford, and I followed two years later. I've been here 4 years already (twice as long as originally planned).
Its definitely not saving us any money (living in San Francisco) but we're keeping the airlines in business!
There are things I love about being here and things I miss about NY (particularly friends & family).

Trips home for birthdays & xmas were not enough for me.

Re: Anybody ever moved to a different state?
If we do move out of state, it would probably be to NJ (LOL). I think both FH and I like the Northeast more than other areas and also, our jobs in Finance and Computers to some extent would be hard to come by in other parts of the country.
I did move out of state once, from PA to NYC, right after college, and while making friends was not easy, its not impossible, especially given the large # of grads from my college who are now in NYC.
I do think that moving to a location where you're always driving/no public contact with strangers may put you in a more difficult social situation, and it may be more difficult to meet people... But that's just basing it on my parent' experience when they came to Phila.
