I went to a wedding upstate where they did a 'dollar dance' - people had to give money to dance with the bride. Apparently this is a common thing up there, i was the only one who thought it was strange.

Re: anybody hear of a money dance?
it's also a filipino tradition to do a money dance at the reception. people line up to dance with the bride and groom and pin money to them in order to do so. i'm skipping it at my reception though, not enough time.

That is what I thought as well.
I have also heard of the bride and groom going onto the dance floor for a song and people had to pay to dance with them. I am not to sure how it works though because I have never seen it done before, I've only heard about it.

Throwing money at the bride or the groom or whomever, is a tradition in many cultures including Greek and Polish...I personally LOVE IT...and I loved at Anita's (vita930) wedding...heres a nice shot of her husband throwing $$ at her...I love it!

Re: anybody hear of a money dance?
it is also a Polish traditionThe Money dance
guests pin money on the bride to buy a dance. reception guests can buy a dance with the bride by pinning money to her veil or tucking bills into a special bridal purse. the money collected is passed on to the newlyweds to take on their honeymoon.
here are two other variations:
the bride and groom stand in the middle of a circle made by the guests. the groom takes off the bride's veil and the guests throw the money into it.
the band plays a polka and guests line up to dance with the bride. The maid of honor wears an apron and collects the money given by the guest for the dance. After all guests have danced with the bride, they form a tight circle around the bride. The groom tries to break through the circle while the guests try hard to keep him out. Once he breaks through, he picks up his bride and carries her away to their honeymoon.

a couple we met on our HM told us about this- we thought it was odd
but since they got married in Kentucky- this was all the money they got

I've seen it done at weddings in the South and Midwest (basically every wedding I have gone to outside of the NY Metro area).
Like Beth said, this was the money that they got, most people gave gifts.

This is really common basically everywhere in the country except for NY/New England. I think it's a little tacky.
I've been to Greek weddings where they throw money at the bride and groom on the dance floor, and I think that's a nice cultural tradition that has some very nice symbolism.
Arranging a dance where people have to pay to dance with the bride and groom, though? I think that's just a little greedy/tacky...(IMO)

Re: anybody hear of a money dance?
I saw it done at A Sicilian wedding once. it was really cute... all the men lined up next to the bride's mother... she decided whether or not they were suitable enough to dance with her daughter and then they gave her money which she put in a little purse. the bride and groom were then given the money at the end....It was onyl one song, so maybe she got a $100 depending on how much people gave?? it was cute though...

I've seen this done before. It's to supposed be given to the bride and groom to help tip the band, matre'd etc.... It's is also a wish of good fortune for their future.

Re: anybody hear of a money dance?
I'm from upstate and I must say this is a common thing! I've always thought it was weird, but they form lines to dance with the bride and the groom and give them money to dance with each of them.Plus, it is very common for the wedding to have a gift table where guests can drop off their actual gifts instead of the envelopes we are used to down here.
