after their wedding? FH and I just don't want to strap ourselves and buy a house here on LI. We love it here but can't lead the life we want here. Anybody feeling this way??? Please tell me I'm not the only one......

We're staying in NY. Right now we're in Rockland County and will probably stay there. FH is in the FDNY so we have to live in NY.
It kills me, I have good friends in Raleigh, NC and Columbus, OH who have beautiful brand new HUGE homes for less than what it would cost for a 1BR condo!

We're thinking of moving to either North or South Carolina. My brother and his wife & daughter just moved there this past February and they absolutely love it. I feel that I my FH and I will never be able to afford a house in LI although I wish we could live here.
that's where i grew up. and while i might sound like a broken record b/c i say this a lot....i had a spacious, 2BR apt for $450/month...i gave that up for a tiny, cramped tech. one bedroom apt here. i am miserable (in regards to my living situation)...even if we didn't have some credit card debt right now, we STILL can't afford a real apt. on LI!!! forget houses...that is years away.

Re: Anybody moving out of state to buy a house....
I moved to NJ and the price of my condo was no where near what you would pay on LI. Plus, my taxes are half of what a comp. would be in my hometown.
I don't think I could go any further than I possibly am.
I think it may be different if you are moving to your family that is already in that location. But it is slightly depressing if you are moving away from them. JMO.

we talked about it, but realized that it only really benefits if you move out of state with your NY salary. otherwise, the cost of living and the rate of pay usually balance each other out so it would be just about the same thing. (if someone has had a past experience otherwise, please tell me so i can talk to FH!) i would love to be able to move to the carolinas with a $60k a year salary, but i don't think it will happen. and for me as a realtor, the housing prices based on my rate of commission work out to me actually making more money in NY.
i had a friend who was making $45k a year in NY. she recently moved to VA with her FH and for the SAME exact job, down there she's getting about $10/hr!
Actually when I moved to NC, I got a job making $4,000 MORE than I was making in NY. I am a CPA. So It varies depending on what your career is.
Yeah, I've been looking for a teaching job down there and NC pays pretty good! And you would be raking in the cash down there, b/c they are building and selling new homes like crazy down there!!!!
I am teaching in Raleigh, NC now. We moved down here for the house prices and it definetely paid off. We have a ton more here than we could have afforded in NY. However, I did take a huge pay cut to come down here. Luckily, FH took his NY salary with him. The teaching salaries are no where near those in NY/NJ. But, the houses, taxes, and car insurance is cheaper. Everything else is similar in price. It is gorgeous down here and if you are looking to start a family, it is a great place to be.

We have no plans to move any time soon but we have a very strong feeling we will buy in Jersey before we could ever afford to buy in NY.

I have discussed this with FH and he doesn't want to because he loves being a FDNY. If we move out of state then he would have to go through another states training program.
That is the same problem I'm having except my FH is NYPD. And he's not interested in going to any local precincts.

I fear for the people that think a snow storm is just as bad as a hurricane. I think the people in Louisiana would disagree. Hurricanes are no joke. I'm an HR Mgr. and over half of the office is looking for homes out of state after the last two years.

we bought a house in CT, however the part of CT where we live is way too similar to NY- there are cheaper parts, but they are up north more-and I dont want to be there

Fh and I were just talking about this last night. We will most likely have to leave LI if we want to lead the life we want too.. It's depressing seeing the costs of houses here and the cost of living itself is out of hand.

Just had to add also depends where in VA...where we live, just outside of DC is actually as bad as LI!!!!! Only good thing is that if we ever decide to move to NY at least we know we should get as much for our house as we will have to spend there!!!!
