DH and I are renting (subleasing). DH pays the lady we sublease from. She stopped paying 5 months rent now and owes over $7,000 (of which DH paid her). The court is saying that we have to pay the whole amount in order for our case to be appealed because we are fighting to stay there. DH just told me that his union lawyer told him that if we don't pay we will have to leave the apt. and that the court might come after him for the money. Any advice?????

I am a lawyer, but not that kind of law. My understanding is he is right, but then your remedy is to go after person you sublease from and sue them, for breach of contract, fraud, etc. Can go to landlord tenant court.

the problem is that all we have is her telephone # she moved (and the court uses our address when sending her notices).

Certified check from DH's bank and he has received email confirmation for everything he has paid her from her.

But how does the check get from your bank to her? Does your bank have her address?

he gets a certified check address to her (just her name) and she deposits it in her account.

If she stopped paying and the LL evicts her...yes you have to leave. your remedy is to sue her.
I don't understand how you get the rent to her. i understand its by certified check but do you mail it, hand deliver, wire transfer?
