Anyone been to Jamaica?

Anyone been to Jamaica?

DH and I are looking at Couples Negril resort for our belated honeymoon. The resort was just written up in Travel and Leisure magazine as #7 in all of the Carribean. Just wondering if anyone has been to Jamaica and what you thought.

Been to Jamaica and stayed at a Breezes resort in Montego Bay. I think Couples is the sister property to Breezes but Im not sure.

Anyway - we had fun but its the least favorite carribbean desitination we have been to. Montego Bay's waters are absolutely beautiful but the areas outside the resort were downright scary.

The resort itself was nothing to write home about. Food was pretty blah, entertainment was nil, rooms were fine. Most of the water activities were included which was nice but their facilities definitely need an upgrade.

We were there with a couple who had stayed at Sandals the year before and they said that Sandals didnt compare to that place...so you may want to check out Sandals.

We went to a resort in Negril and it was wonderful. The ocean was beautiful and the beaches were great. There is a great restaurant called Ricks that is awesome for drinks and lobster and to watch the sunset. The areas around the resort are alittle dangerous and I wouldn't suggest going off your hotel unless you are with a resort tour or a ton of people.

Sandals is definately a beautiful resort. I would definately check them out : ).

I have been to Jamaica. We stayed at the Breezes resort in Ochos Rios.
I wouldn't go back. This part of Jamaica is dangerous & you can;t leave your resort unless its to go to Dun River Falls by bus.

Re: Anyone been to Jamaica?

Thanks girls. Our other option is St. Lucia. Your thoughts on safety are exactly what I have heard from others. I want to be able to leave the resort and explore...so I'm thinking Jamaica may not be the best.

Stef and others...where else have you stayed? I have only been to Grand Cayman and am looking for something different that that.

Thanks!

I have been to Aruba, Mexico, St. Thomas, St. John...all nice but Aruba is a place where you can explore the entire island safely and there is little/next to no poverty

Ugh..i just posted this long thing and now its gone!

Anyway - Aruba is nice - safe and an whole island to explore. Its a little slow in the nightlighe/fine dining arena, but still quite beautiful.

Key West, Bermuda and Mexico are also great alternatives.

Mishy - I went to Hedo II for one day while we were in Jamaica :D Ive heard Hedo III is a much younger crowd.

Thats okay I would rather see hot young bodies rather then old wrinkled ones.. Another couple that we just met went there and they had the best time.. They did say that it is a HUGE party atmosphere!

My vote is for St. Lucia. We stayed at the Sandals, Golf & Spa, and had a BLAST!!!!
We felt so safe leaving the resort. The people in town were very friendly, and NOT pushy at all.

My sister went to Jamaica last year. She didn't go to the Sandals resort but she didn't have a good time. That I remember.

Re: Anyone been to Jamaica?

We went to Ocho Rios in 1999 & loved it. Went off our resort (Jamaica Grande) day/night with no problems. Had absolutely no problems, even went exploring a little away from the 'touristy areas' & lived to tell. Jamaicans are just as friendly to you as you are to them.

I really believe a lot of this is hype, had we listened to all the naysayers who were scared to leave the resort we would not have never seen/done so much & not had as good a time as we did. Not trying to diss but I really think a lotta peeps go on vacation & don't pack their common sense. The things that happen in Jamaica have happened in many other tourist areas aroudn the world, no matter where you go it'll be a third world country & they make their $$ off tourism & will encourage you to spend & there are pushy vendors everywhere. We saw tourists flashing money, jewlery, etc. in not only Jamaica, but Mexico, St. Maarten & Aruba. Personally, I wouldn't do this in NYC & I was born & raised here!

Altho I digress, in the Jamaican marketplace they can be pushy but we were polite, said no & kept it moving, no problems. We're heading to Couples for a 2 week HM, 1 week in Ocho Rios & 1 week in Negril. Can't wait to get back Mon!

Where ever you go for your honeymoon, hope you have a wonderful time! JMO I recommend either Negril or Ochie, get as far away from the airport as possible! Just wanted to show you another side of the story

Re: Anyone been to Jamaica?

Since I am Jamaican I tend to always take offense when people label my island as a scary/bad/not safe place. NY is scary does that mean no one should visit the city?

Whenever hubby and I visit anywhere we see for ourselves, we do not let what others feel/think hinder us from venturing out. I think my island is beautiful and I would recommend it 100% I have been to other islands and countries and there are safe parts as well as non-safe parts, that would not be an hinderance to us not going. Wherever you decide have fun!!! Happy planning.

Re: Anyone been to Jamaica?

Maysie, you and I were posting at the same time. Like you I am sure there are many others out there who feel the same about my beautiful island. It sells itself. Thanks for sharing your perspective on the topic. Jamaica is beautiful and it would be a shame to not experience it once.

Never have been to Jamaica - heard it is beautiful but they are having some problems down there - dangerous to leave the site where you are and go into town. A doctor that my FH knows just got murdered down there - Sorry to bring some bad new and i am not trying to scare you, just a little warning.

Re: Anyone been to Jamaica?

Are there no murders in NY or anywhere else in the world??? Do we not have economic problems here in the US??? So one person was killed, does that mean the govt must issue a ban on travel to the island???

People tend to always focus on the negatives and make it seem as if when something happens, in say for instance Kingston or any major part of the island, the entire island has problems.

I will not try to defend my country on this thread anymore b/c this will get too emotional for me. I will leave this thread alone by saying don't knock it until you have tried it.

The general statements are what kills me...'THEY SAY THEY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS' what is that supposed to mean. America has problems, the world has problems.
