We stopped in Freeport to go to the LLBean outlet. It was very rustic. Not much to do. Bought some boots.

Yes other than the outlets in Freeport and eating some yummy lobster.... it's a quiet escape.

Wow.... one of my FAVORITE places to visit!! We have been stayed a few times at a friends house there, so have done some things like:
1. Shopping in Freeport at the outlets.... there is also a Thomas Kinkaide (artist) gallery there, so we always like to see that!
2. Hung out in Portland.... there is an outrageous farmers market there if you are staying somewhere where you will be cooking... lots of nice places to have lunch along the water.
3. My husband LOVES to fish there in rivers , streams, lakes or on boats!!
4. Whale watch expeditions! You see some GREAT things like seal,whales, penguins, dolphin big fish!
5. Maine State Fair or a Blueberry Festival is in August, there is what I think is called....
(Rainmama & Miahsdad live there, so they might know this & could tell you things to do too!!!) Horse racing, bake offs, animal competitions (cows that were like 1,500 pounds!! It was like being in Charlotts Web at the Fair!! I was looking for Wilbur & Templeton to come out any minute!! Just like what you picture a fair should be!!
6. Acadia National Park! THE MOST AMAZING SIGHTS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We love to visit there!!

I went to Maine for the first time last year. We were in New hampshire & went just over the border to Kittery. GREAT outlet shopping there. And we went to a cool Fort. I liek that are but mostly we were on the NH side.
We wanted to go to Portland, but MY boss had just moved there, so we didn't want to feel obligated to stop by! Maybe next year!
My best friend in HS went to college in Machias. Freaking far, but she loved it. She brought back some great photos.
Very rural, everything is at least an hour away from everything else.

I used to vacation there every summer. Old Orchard beach, Ocean Park, Freeport, Portland, some town i can't spell (Olgunquit ??)
i miss going there, i told DH i want to vacation there again sometime. we used to rent a house with family friends right on the beach in Ocean Park. I loved it!

The reason I am asking is: we would like to go there for a 4 day weekend, to relax, spend time at the beach/pool, eat great seafood, do some sight seeing may be...
Any town in particular you guys would recommend? May be there are some fun activities or a great seafood place you know off. My friend was in Olgunguit (sp?) she said it was very nice, but touristy, which I really don't mind

What time of year are you coming? Any specific weekend? There are quite a few festivals in the summer and early fall. I could probably give you a good recommendation of where to go if you tell me when! ![]()

Rainmama might be able to help witht e location.... we were staying in Newcastle, Maine not to far from Bar Harbor...and it took us only about 1/2 an hour to get to the festival!! And then Acadia National Park was maybe an 1 - 1 1/2 hours away!!

Hmmmm....there aren't any festivals going on that weekend (that I can think of) but you will be here the same weekend as my shower. Wanna come? ![]()
Bar Harbor is my absolute favorite place I've ever been to but it's an extra three hour drive from Portland, and coming during peak tourist season, the drive could be pretty bad. There is also a town called Boothbay Harbor which also has that 'Downeast' feel and is only an hour or so from Portland.
If it's the coast you want, Ogunquit is pretty nice and not far from the NH border. As mentioned before, the Kittery outlet stores aren't that far from there.
Honestly, any place you hit on the coast would be a win. There are many, many small inns and B&Bs in some of the less touristy areas...you just have to do a little research.
Portland is wonderful. It's where I grew up. There are hundreds of great restaurants and a lot of bars to hit if you're into that scene. You can always take a ferry from Portland to one of the many islands in Casco Bay for a day or even to stay in an inn. In case you want to do a little online research, the closest islands are Peaks, Great Diamond, and Long.
Let me know if you have any more questions! The coast only makes up a fraction of the state. If you're willing to go inland I can point you to some great towns!

Val- do you remember if it was the one in a town called Union?? There are more darn blueberry festivals in this state it's ridiculous!

Yes, I think it was Union Rainmama!! And it is probably the right festival because that weekend after she is going is normally the time we would go!
But now that they have GASP!!! 3 BABIES traveling with friends is not on the important list...... Too bad for us because we used to have a blast!!![]()

Maine is absolutely amazing...My family has a summer house there in a town called Liberty on Lake St. George...As Rainmama said, it is a very relaxing place...
You have the outlet shopping in Kittery but that is good for rainy days...
Boothbay Harbor is absolutely breathtaking...Also Camden is a coastal city where you can do the boat tours (ie whale watching, fishing, puffin watching etc)...On the outskirts of Camden is Lincolnville which I absolutely love...My family & I go there everytime we want to have seafood...There is a restaurant there & then there is a picnic area on the beach...So if it is nice, you can relax outside & eat while enjoying the beach....

There is the Maine Antique Festival in Union Aug 13-15th if that is your thing...There is the 40th Annual Lobster Festival in Winter Harbor on Aug 14th...That is all I can find though...

I went probably about 8 years ago to Portland. It rained the entire week (this was in august) so we couldn't do much that we wanted-my dad wanted to take us to arcardia which i hear is breathtaking-but it was kinda far from where we were and the weather was so crappy. we were able to get in an afternoon @ the lighthouse which was pretty!
