Anyone clash with their mom on their dress?

Anyone clash with their mom on their dress?

I found the dress I want for my wedding, White with red trim on the sweetheart neckline and bottom trim. I send to the pic of it to the women in my life, and what happens!!! All the young women love it, the older women hate it (including my mom who thinks it looks like a cocktail dress!) My mother wants me to wear that wedding scene in 'Coming To America' type of princess dress!! (Bear in mind she has not actually seen me in any wedding dresses yet!)

I know everyone tells me I should make myself happy and to hell with what everyone else thinks, but it kind of bugs me that my mother doesn't see the beauty in my dress that I see.

Anyone else have this problem??

My mom wanted me in something like your mom had in mind.
Do you think that she has issues b/c it's not a totally white gown?
Maybe she'll come around once you go gown shopping.

I'm almost positive it's the 'not completely bridal white' dress issue. Also because it's strapless...etc etc. I wasn't crazy about it looking at it on the hanger myself, but when I tried it on, that was another story. My FI says maybe I should try it on in front of her to show her......ahhhh you can't please everyone, so just please yourself, right?

Anyway, this is what I mean about white with red trim, it's more white than anything else anyway!!

someone was trying that dress on when I was trying on dresses, it was very pretty on her!
My mom and I both love the dress I ordered. I think its a whole different ball game when you actually have the dress on. Go with your mom and let her (and you!) actually see it on you and then see what everyone thinks!!

If this is THE dress, you have to get what you want. Try it on for her - she might come around!
I think your gown is beautiful. Good luck with Mom.
ETA: my mom is REALLY traditional and now LOVES my ivory, strapless, form fitting gown.

My mom now loves my dress, but originally wanted me to get something ' a little more flashy..'.. I wanted nothing on the gown, no embroidery, crystals, lace.. etc. So when I found the one, she was skeptical.. but when I put it on, she knew it was 'me'.

As for HER gown... we are having a day wedding, with a southern feel... more relaxed than stuffy, and now she wants to wear a black satin strapless ballgown with a rhinestone belt!!! What?! She just doesn't see why I don't like it...I think I am going to lose this battle, and I really don't want to.

Lauren, I wonder if it was me you saw trying it on a few weeks ago!!! LOL I was at the Wedding Center in Commack, and there was another bride trying on white and ivory strapless gowns.

An old BF I spoke to tonight said to me after I sent him a pic, 'Wow! Damn, that is hot, I can definitely see you in that dress!' A friend of mine said 'it's beautiful but sexy, it's definitely you!'.

That pretty much sealed the deal for me.....my mom is just going to have to deal!!

My mom wanted me in all white - which is what i ended up falling in love with - but originally I really wanted something like the dresses with the blue sash or blue floral embroidery to match my BMs. My mom and older women vetoed it. My mom was afraid people would think i wasnt 'pure.' But I love my gown now - i'm determined to wear colored shoes though which my mom also has issues with

I think a lot of mothers want/expect all white. They'll adjust.

If the strapless aspect is bothering your mother, you can always have wrap or short jacket made to wear during the ceremony.

If you love your dress and are paying for it yourself, then go for it. If your mother is paying for it that's another story ...

Re: Anyone clash with their mom on their dress?

I originally thought I wanted a dress with some color in it. Every picture I saved was a wedding dress with red and each time I showed one to my mom she said 'that's not a wedding dress - it looks like a debutante dress'. It got me so frustrated that I dreaded going gown shopping and put it and her off for weeks. All that ended when I found my dress. It was nothing that either of us expected and once I had it on we both knew it was the one.

My advice is, let her have her say but keep your mind open as well and try on lots of dresses - you might surprise both of you. If you fall in love with something she doesn't like, unless she is paying for it, Oh Well. It's your choice.

My mom loves my dress, in fact I think she's the one that initially pulled it out and suggested I try it on. Granted it is all white, but that's what I wanted.

As for your dress, it really is beautiful and very elegant. A lot of girls are moving towards color in their wedding gowns, one of my co-workers is wearing a similar dress in October. Altho this is her 2nd wedding, I don't think it makes a difference. You need to do what makes you feel the most comfortable, but try to do it tactfully so as not to hurt your mom's feelings. Def let her see you try it on, it may grow on her!!

Good luck!!!

I love that dress and if I was going to get married in February like I originally wanted to I was goign to go with that dress. I think it is very different and I would go with your mom try on dresses and throw that one in the mix and try it on.

Re: Anyone clash with their mom on their dress?

Just to follow up....

I got my dress today...and it's ALL WHITE!!

My mom picked out a dress, it was the first one I tried on and it was a style I hadn't tried before, straight neckline strapless with a ballgown skirt, a chapel train and so much swarovski crystals and beading I felt like a princess....she said just try it on, it looks nice.

So I try it on and I have to admit it made me look slimmer (something the other dress didn't) and my shoulders didn't look as broad for once in my life. And it was absolutely gorgeous. The other women in the shop including some other brides actually stopped and asked me what gown it was and the cost!! I found a picture of it, but unfortunately it does not come close to doing it justice. (I should have taken a pic of it!!)

It was out of my price range, but my mom was so ecstatic about the dress, they offered to pay half. Here is a picture of what I think is my dress, but remember, there are a lot of crystals and silver embroidery on it!!
