Re: anyone donating instead of favors

We made a donation to a breast cancer fund since my MIL has had to deal with it. We preferred this idea since it really meant something to us. No one seemed to mind not having a favor to bring home - in fact some people thanked me for not giving them some trinket they would just toss away. I know there are people that like favors, but we are not in that category. Go for whatever means something to you and don't worry about what other people think. It's an honorable thing to give to a charity when it really comes from your heart.

You don't have to give anything additional. We did a donation as well and while I thought of giving chocolates with a little note about the donation I ended up not wanting to be bothered with it and just wrote on the back of our seating cards a little blurb about the donation. No one seemed to mind not having something to bring home and I felt better about putting that money towards a good cause. Also, I think guests appreciate knowing why this particular charity is important to you so you should mention your grandfather and why the charity is meaningful.

We are donating to two foundations and having a donation card made up for each guest. We are also doing the jordan almonds in boxes. So all and all we spend more $$ on each of these things than we would've with a favor.

We have been to weddings and actually left the favor at the RH, which is a waste of $$.

The more and more I think about it, the more I think I want to do donations also. It's a really great idea and I feel like people would rather money go towards a charity than to a favor they probably won't use. I might do a donation and a small favor, like chocolates or something edible.

FH and I are donating to 2 donations. My mom is 10000% set on still giving a favor but I don't think it's necessary and it's just another added expense. But i THINK she might make some type of edible favor to give.

We'll see.

I think we're going to donate to the Susan G Komen since my mom is a Cancer survivor and I think we're going to give everyone a bottle of Jones soda with a custom label since I'm going to be a Jones.

we just did a donation to the american diabetes association and they are wonderful- you can pick out whether you want a bookmark, table tent or a scroll wrapped with ribbon (thats what we got) and they will send you enough to give to each guest. it has a nice saying about the donation in lieu of a traditional favor printed with your 2 names and wedding date. i may do like chocolates also but maybe not... totally not necessary to do a favor if you are donating..

We are doing a donation only. Just MY opinion wedding favors are just dust collectors and now more then ever legitimate charities need all the help they can get. Like I said just MY opinion not looking to cause drama.

My cousin made a donation like this but still gave a little box of hand made chocolates. It had 4 small pieces inside and the box had their names and date on it. At least this way everyone took something home and it was very reasonably priced to do.

I don’t think many people expect favors anymore, and a donation to the Cancer society will go a longer way then anything else.

Re: anyone donating instead of favors

I am doing a donation favor! I think its a great idea! At first I wanted to give to the ASPCA but then my FMIL asked me to donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation because Fh's nephew has the disease but they do not know if it will manifest into full blown cystic fibrosis yet. So far so good with him so I decided that would be a good cause to donate to because his family is directly impacted by it. I plan on just doing the donation and having small cards at each place setting telling people that I have given a donation in their honor in lieu of a traditional favor. I don't think people are really expecting tangible favors anymore, especially since lots of people are going green and feel that giving something out just to give something out is wasteful. The only thing I would give out would be something edible...that way people either take it to eat or they leave it and I will have extra chocolate on my hands

It is so refreshing to read a thread about not giving out favors! It is not expected in my circle but some people coming are used to getting a favor. I love the idea of a donation- thanks!

I am doing a donation. I do not have ONE favor from any wedding I have been too (and I am old; been to a lot).

We're going to be doing the same thing. You don't have to give a favor with the donation. Usually when you give the donation you can order cards to put on the place settings at the wedding that will inform the guests that 'in lieu of a favor the couple has decided to make a donation'. It's very touching to do and most people appreciate it more.

I have a different take on donations as favors, i just personally wouldn't want to use my wedding to showcase that I am donating to charity.

If i am going to donate money to a charity, i am going to do it because i believe in it, and want to help out the charity, I wouldn't want to do it in Lieu of something else.

I think doing it in lieu of a favor is making it seem like ur only doing the donation because your not giving a favor.

I have heard of it being done both ways. If you want something as a take away, maybe a little bag of jordan almonds as well.

We are doing a donation and if in the end we still have some money to play with, we want to do a photo booth. So we figured that is also another little extra if we add on.
