Don't fret! It may take some time to be able to save enough for a down payment, but house prices won't go up forever! FH and I started looking and found one over a year later. Hang in there, your turn will come!!

Me!!!! My FH and I are looking but there is nothing out there - even condos are getting to be just as much as a house - that is ridiculous - We want to buy something b/c the interest rates are so low but I don't want to have to work to pay my mortgage. This is the perfect time to MOVE!!!!

I agree...prices are so high, and trying to save for both things is stressing!

I freak out when I think about it, because even if prices go down a little, the **** taxes are ridiculous!!!!!

Please.. I can't take it. I want to live on LI but the taxes are crazy and honestly- the thought of dealing with all the traffic makes me want to puke.. so we are probably going to stay in Jersey- buy a condo in Jersey City- and then try to have rug rats- when they are ready to go to school we'll worry- but at least then we'll have some equity

We thought of doing a condo too so we had some kind of equity, but the condos in Suffolk are more than some of the houses!

Re: anyone else feel like they'll never afford a house???
The average price of a home in my town for 2002 was $503,000...we can barely afford half of that. Guess it's time to start looking elsewhere which would make us very sad...

This is why we decided to buy in Florida. I wish we could have stayed here but the prices are absolutely ridiculous! It's just not worth it to me.

Things down here in Virginia aren't much better. FH and I just bought a little townhouse, no garage, for $234,000. AND, my commute into D.C. is an hour and a half each way! Traffic here is so bad. We got lucky with buying our place - FH is former military so he got a Veteran's loan with no money down.
Don't worry; just keep your hopes up and don't stop looking. Research all your money options too.

Re: anyone else feel like they'll never afford a house???
I constantly worry about this. FH and I discussed it and we are going to buy a condo to start off. He explained how it would be better to get that and then save for a house. I guess I gotta trust him. All I know is that I want a place with a big livingroom, dining area and a backyard. I want to be able to entertain. The only thing I worry about is children. Is is ok to raise a child living in a condo? I feel like it is such a small space and confining for a kid. But, FH says it will be plenty big, with plenty of room.
We will probably never buy a house on Long Island because of the cost and taxes. We have already decided to move to Florida in about 5 years.

Re: anyone else feel like they'll never afford a house???
I almost wrote my thesis on this topic - how is it that in metropolitan areas (like NYC, DC, Boston) a couple where both people have decent jobs cannot afford a house??? How is it that a generation ago they could and now they cannot?
My FH and I make an ok - not great - but ok living (100k combined) and we cannot afford ANYTHING that isn't falling apart or in an unsafe area.
It really p*&&%ses me off sometimes b/c we are still paying off college loans, we work really hard and go for every promotion, and here we are unable to even start a family b/c we want a house first. It's total BS!!!

Re: anyone else feel like they'll never afford a house???
FH and I go through this all the time! We just figured out how much of a mortgage we can afford to carry each month, so we know where to look, and that reduces our options to a 1 bedroom cardboard box with a view of the gutter!
By next January we hope to be actively looking for a house though, and HOPEFULLY, we'll be able to save the $$$$ to upgrade to a shack.
