Is there anyone else out there in LIW land that shares the same pain in these ridiculously horrible knees? I've had bad knees since I was like 14 yrs old, & they've really been bothering me for the past 2 weeks. I think it's because of all of this rain.
If there's anyone who has problems with their knees, can you please tell me if there's been anything that has helped you. I can't take Motrin because it knocks me out, & tylenol really doesn't do anything to help the pain.
What's worse is that in Hawaii, one of the places we're going to visit is supposedly the wettest place on earth.

I have bad knees too. Why does motrin knock you out? It shouldn't cause it's just ibuprofen, it doesn't have any type of narcotic in it. You could try Alleve, thats good. I also use the knee band. Also icing it at night when your watching t.v.

Re: Anyone else with KNEE Problems?
I have been a soccer player my whole life, so my knees are basically shot. I ice them if I am on them a lot. Otherwise, I take motrin to get the swelling down. I just expect that they will hurt in rainy weather.

I know, it's weird with Motrin knocking me out. I have no idea why, but seriously, every single time I've taken it, I've fallen asleep within the hour. I'm not making this up. My body just seems to conk out with motrin. I usually use the knee band during the weekends when I'm home doing my laundry & cleaning up.

I think it's just hereditary. My mom & her whole side of the family have terrible knees & hips. I was in gymnastics for years & dance for years also, so that certainly didn't help. I had xrays done, but there's nothing wrong with the bones. I had an MRI when I was about 16 yrs. old & the doctor just said that the meniscus was a little swollen. My grandmother has Rheumatoid Arthritis in her knees & she had hip replacement last year. My other grandmother (Dad's mom) had sever arthritis to the point that her hands became crunched up.
My mom had knee surgery 10 years ago, my dad had knee surgery 15 years ago, so........I think it's just my genes. I'm thinking it's just arthritis.

Re: Anyone else with KNEE Problems?
yes...i used to think that i didn't need knee pads to roller blade.
i very lightly banged my knee today on my desk (and i mean lightly that normally wouldn't have bothered me) and my whole knee has been aching since....and it actually was a bit swollen.
i take aleve for everything. (naproxen sodium) usually i just deal with the knee stuff...after 12 years, you just accept it...i am grateful it's not the pain that involves surgery....my daugther's uncle has had 3 surgeries on his knee in like 2 years. they informed him that the next time would be for a full knee replacement...he's a year younger than me!!

Re: Anyone else with KNEE Problems?
I've had knee pain since grammar school. Turns out I have loose kneecaps (just bad genetics) which cause a constant pain from both knees down to my toes when it acts up. Bad whether aggrivates it as well as PMS and physical actiivity. i take Tae Kwon Do so they take a beating.
The best thing I find is wearing GOOD SHOES! If i wear certain heels or non supportive shoes they start killing me. The Dr. Scholls gel inserts help.
I did physical therapy whcih involved building up leg muscles and stretching. That helped a bit. i found running helped. Yeah, I know i thought running would kill my knees, and at first they acted up a bit. But the more I trained and built up my leg muscles the less my knees hurt.
There is also a spray you can get to help alleviate the pain. It's called Pain Stop (looks like hairpsray). It's like instant releif and since it's topical it shouldn't knock you out. Hope this helps...the pain *****!!
PS they didn't bother me when i was in Hawaii...but that was in January when it was pretty dry & windy.

Re: Anyone else with KNEE Problems?
Don't get me started.....
I have chondromalacia in my right knee (aka water on the knee) and also arthritis in both knees. My right knee has barely any cartilage left in it at all. My orthopedist basically told me I have the knees of someone twice my age!!
I had surgery back in 98 and ever since then I've had 'weather knee', which means it kills me if it rains or if it's overcast.
My doctor prescribed Relafen, which works pretty well, as well as Aleve. I used to swear by Vioxx until it got taken off the market.
Swimming helps, and they also say to build up your thigh muscles to alleviate some of the stress.

What did you doctor say? What is his diagnostic?
You could have any kind of condition but you need to know what it is.

Re: Anyone else with KNEE Problems?
With knee problems your best best is lots of ice for 20 minutes at a time and taking Alleve . Depending on the type of knee injury, a brace will work. If it is below your knee on the patellar tendon, you can wear a Cho-Pat, usually designed for chondromalacia, but it also works really well for things like tendonitis caused by jumping and things like that. A regular neoprane sleeve with the donut cut out of the middle might also work due to the compression. Exercising will help strengthen the knee, but I would do non weight bearing things, such as swimming, on the bike, or an elliptical. These won't cause as much pain as regular exercising since you won't have the constant weight bearing on your legs. I would also make sure that you have good footwear and see how your arches are. If arches are flat, which would cause a lot of problems in knees, hips and low back, try orthotics like the Spenco ones that are at Sports Authority and stuff.... Also heel cups will help absorb the impact on your knees. I am an athletic trainer at a ahigh school, so all of my kids have knee problems and this is what I usually tell them to do - Hope to help!

Re: Anyone else with KNEE Problems?
FH had a torn meniscus (SP?) repaired arthroscopically recently. Additionally, he has arthritis in the injured knee and he's currently undergoing a therapy where they give him an injection five times over five weeks and it seems to be helping. He has had terrible pain in one knee form an injury three yrs ago. You should find a good orthopedist and take it from there.

Re: Anyone else with KNEE Problems?
I have bad knees from a car accident, and I have already had one surgery to each knee. For pain my Dr. recommends an ant-inflammatory like Advil, Motrin or Aleve.
I use ice if Iswell up after a work out and I avoid high impact activities. If you work out, you should also make sure to buy sneakers that help absord impact and replace them as soon as they get worn out.
I do get pain sometimes when it rains, but I find that a warm climate (like Hawaii) helps relieve the pain regardless of the rain.
You should really consider seeing an orthopedist. You don't always need surgery, the Dr. might prescribe a good series of physical therapy to help strengthen yout joints.
HTH.

I just had a bilateral knee xray today, so we'll see what that says. I'll keep you updated. I can't believe there's so many people out there w/knee problems.

Re: Anyone else with KNEE Problems?
i can only bend my left knee about 1/3 of the way. it stems from a problem at birth that was never corrected that leg is also almost an inch shorter than my right, so i limp a little and drag my foot. it's mostly noticable when i'm tired or it's humid out. i've gotten good at hiding it.
only aleve helps when it aches. i've tried PT, but it didn't help me and this problem can't be fixed by surgery
