We just looked at a house that had radiant heat throughout....it's a heating system that is actually underneath the flooring. Neither of us had ever heard of this before.
Anyone know the pros/cons of this?

Re: Anyone ever hear of radiant heating?
I have heard about it...on This old House! I think its more efficient but I know one drawbck would be , if any of the tubes need to be fixed, your flooring would have to be ripped up.
I bet if you check on the This Old House website, you can find out more info!
good Luck

I have heard of it! Not sure what the draw backs are. I have never heard of it throughout a house though.
its a unusual in whole house applications but is the most superior form of home heating. The PEC tubing used in the floor has a 50 year lifespan....so you may want to find out when it was installed & then decide..good luck

Re: Anyone ever hear of radiant heating?
We had this in my house growing up. It was awesome cause the floor always felt so warm - no cold feet when you get up in the morning. But, at some point I guess the pipe broke and I think it was a pretty big PITA for my parents - had to pull up the floor to fix it and it totally soaked the carpet. after that happened they changed over to baseboard - we missed it a lot though.

Quite a few homes that we have looked at in NJ have it and I LOVE it!!! Hubby loves it too.... Not too sure about the specifics though....

Re: Anyone ever hear of radiant heating?
Thanks everyone! I should find out how old it is, especially since much of the house has ceramic tile and I'd hate to see that all ripped up in a few years!
It's strange, because in 2 of the bedrooms, there's baseboard heating, but in all the other rooms it's radiant heating...not sure why!
We just did it in our main floor bathroom! It is really awesome! Repair access is in a panel in a utility room underneath in the basement. The work is guaranteed for something like 30 years so they said we didn't need the access panel but we have no luck so we left it.

this house doesn't have a basement so I'm guessing the floors would still need to be ripped up.
I also found out that this house was built in 1950 - anyone know how long this heating has been around? I should find out when it was installed - it may be due for an update!

Re: Anyone ever hear of radiant heating?
We just built our house and put in the Radiant heating. My husband researched this for ever and we decide it was the best and most effiecent.
We have been in the house since the summer and love the radiant heating. We are also thinking of putting the tubing underneath a driveway to melt the snow . When the weather gets warming we are finishing the garage and we will radiant heat that also.
We have tile floors and with no slippers on they are soooo warm!
FM me if you need to know anything else...but we LOVE IT!!

Gary always said that (being he is a plumber) if ever had to put in a driveway, he would put the radiant heat below it. Flip it on when it started snowing, BONUS!

Re: Anyone ever hear of radiant heating?
Thanks for the info everyone!
Erica - I would never think of the heating system on the CEILING!
Cooky/Stacey - How nice would it be to have your driveway heated!! There were a few houses near me where I grew up that had this, but only because they were on a steep hill and would otherwise slide all over the place in the icy weather. How nice would it be to not have to shovel!
teri...our inspector was trying to explain it to me...
that they put the wires in a mud layer in the ceiling...
there is popcorn paint on ours...and he said be very careful scrapping it off...b/c if you tear one wire the system is useless... I wanted to do it myself...but not sure if I trust myself

Re: Anyone ever hear of radiant heating?
what do you mean popcorn paint? Is that like interior/ceiling stucco?
