Re: Anyone familiar with Coram?
I believe Coram is in the following school districts: Middle Country Longwood Comsewogue.
It's a decent area, the school districts listed above are okay and I would give Comsewogue the highest rating.
So it depends where in Coram.

Yep, that's the bad area. FH is from Coram and he did a summer program through the county w/ a bunch of kids from that area... he told me some interesting stories.
Coram itself is pretty good, but it depends on the school district. FSIL went to Longwood and told me some pretty scary stories from there (one of which included a girl stabbing another girl in the hand w/ a pencil in the middle of class).
If you bought a house in a different district, but still in Coram, you'd probably be safe.

Middle country is Selden/Centereach.
Gordon Heights used to be bad, and is getting better, but still has high crime...

Re: Anyone familiar with Coram?
Unfortunately, Longwood is a very big school district. It contains coram, middle island, medford And ridge. The thing is some of the areas are really realy nice and some are bad (gordon heights) but they are all grouped into this one big district called longwood. So it is very mixed. We current l live in coram and dh grew up here and went to longwood. I dont think we will still be here when our child is of school age but if we are- we are sending our child to catholic school. Its a shame becuase some of the houses and areas are gorgeous- they just are surrounded by not so nice areas. My feeling eventually is that all areas will be decent someday because of the way Long island market is! You simply cannot afford to live here without making a decent salary.

Re: Anyone familiar with Coram?
I live in Medford and agree about Gordon Heights. Coram is mixed. There are some really nice areas. My sister and BIL have a nice place and friends we have also just bought a nice house. I student taught in Longwood and the elementary school I taught in was also mixed. It wasn't a bad school, the teachers were wonderful, it was just the students came from all different types of lifestyles.

I will also say I agree and generally the schools itself were good and I liked my subbing experience in Longwood.

Ditto! I grew up in coram and went to Longwood. I loved Longwood! But it is a very large district and has a very large and derverse group of people. I really, really loved coram and the house were really nice in my neighborhood. I wouldn't have gone to any other school, I loved it
