Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

Where are you getting your stefana? I kind of want to see it in person before I buy it but I have no idea where to do that!

Re: Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

Hi! I am not Greek but my fiancé is and we are getting married in his church. I didn't even know what Stefana was until he told me:). From what I understand, it is one of the responsibilities of the Koumbaro or Koumbara to pick out and purchase the Stefana.

Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

Did you get yours yet? I most likely will be going with my Koumbara to get it and I don't even know where to begin looking. I was thinking of maybe going into Astoria.

Re: Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

I'm not Greek Orthodox, but I plan on converting and having my mass at a Greek church in Astoria..and I know the Koumbara/Koumbaro takes care of buying that. There are a lot of cute places in Astoria like...Kentrikon & Noufaro and Markellas

Hi, my maid of honor is getting mine so I am not sure where she will get them from but i will ask. They do have glittery ones on pinterest but I'm not sure if you want traditional ones. Are you guys getting married in the Greek church? We probably are I am just not ready to committ to something so traditional.

Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

Yes, we are getting married at St. Johns in Blue Point. Getting married in the church is the main reason we aren't doing a destination wedding. Also I think Greek churches are so pretty and perfect for pictures! We live in Suffolk so we don't go to Astoria too often but we will be going in May for Easter. I'm not sure if I want traditional - I've been looking online but its so hard to tell. I wasn't sure if there was a nice place in Nassau/Suffolk to look to make it easier on my Koumbara.

Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

I would go to Astoria too...you can look online, but I like to see things like that in person. The Koumbara and Koumbaro should pay for that...favors too (and koufeta)...we are not doing the Greek church, but if we WERE, they would pay...this is what my mother KEEPS REMINDING ME :)

Re: Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

I didn't even know I had an option for glitter!!! LOL. I'll ask our Koumbaro where he plans on getting ours and will let you know. I do think Astoria would be your best bet though.

On a side note--I get to now celebrate Easter two times every year!! I feel so lucky, ha

Re: Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

It is nice to celebrate it twice!! I love Greek easter and how everyone celebrates together starting with the fasting, good friday procession and midnight mass on Easter..I have my English-Greek bible so I know what the priest is saying

I think my concern with the greek ceremony is that the vows and ring exchange won't be what I had in mind but I am looking to get married at Archangel Michael in Port Washington and am going to talk to the priest about the options for customizing the ceremony a little

Re: Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

That's really pretty!! I'm sure if you speak to your priest, he will give you ideas with what to change. We are meeting our priest once a month just to get comfortable with him..and he's very modern, and willing to work with my tradition of having my siter as MOH being part of the blessing with the Koumbara

If you talk to the priest, he may make some accommodations. I am Catholic and am not converting, so it was important to me to exchange verbal vows and have a ring exchange. So, I spoke with the priest (who has been so kind and understanding) and he agreed to start our ceremony with the exchange of Catholic vows and then will move on to the traditional Greek ceremony. When our rings get put on our right hand he will then direct each of us to place each other's ring on the left where it will stay:).

Re: Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

Agreed!! The priest these days are very accommodating to making your day special. Good point you brought up about the vows, my next meeting with the priest I will ask him about that. At first I thought..wait the ring is on the right hand?! No it's the left lol, I def want it on my left as well. Very exciting your day is coming up soon too

Re: Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

Yes! Very exciting....it is creeping up very quickly!! I can't wait:)

We are getting married in the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Paul in Garden City. It's a beautiful church. The priest is Father Luke and he is a gem. If you are open to the location of this church, I definitely recommend it.

Anyone getting married in a Greek Orthodox church?

hi emily, i just got married at st paul's. it's beautiful and the priest was great! although we initially met with father luke, he did not perform our service (though we did not know that until the day of). the priest's name completely escapes me but he was really lovely.
