Anyone getting so disgusted with the price of homes that you consider going out of state?
We had no intentions of moving to a house for at least a year or so but we look at these prices and it seems like every penny will be going towards the mortgage and we will never have anything left over. My Fh is now on a North Carolina kick. I have been lookign at sites and teh houses are INCREDIBLE for the amount of money. I would be OK leaving my friends (I figure by this age your friends will be your friends no matter where you live) but I am having a hard time at the thought of leaving my mom. My sister doesn't live far from her but she is not the type to help out nearly as much as I do or would even if I lived a few miles away. Anyone else going through this? This is all talk right now for us. But the thing that keeps me thinking about it is the quality of life factor overall would be soooo much better!

we moved out of state...but unfortunately to an area that is actually more expensive than LI and NYC...if you can believe that...
if you are ok with flying...visiting home is no problem...

I do severely consider this but FI never would. Fi bought a co-op in July and now they are selling for 70,000 more than he paid(which I thought was a ridiculous price as it was). This is for a one bedroom apartment, I cannot imagine what the house market has done since last July.

We moved from NY/NJ to San Diego, own a condo now and with housing prices the way we are, it is almost impossible to get a house here in places you WANT to be. So we are, too, planning on moving to NC. I have been spending hours online and the houses are AMAZING! You can live right near the beach in a huge house for ths price of a condo here!
As of now, we are looking for jobs, houses and areas we like and then will hopefully move. It will be so hard to leave San Diego, but real estate and the schools are terrible!
Where in NC are you looking? We are looking in the Wilmington area....a bit north of Wilmington.

youre going to LEAVE!!??!!
I don't care about the prices...I'm staying...i am quite P-Oed that we didn't buy when we got up here...b/c prices have gone up 20%!!!! but we are on a search for a condo now!!
btw...I hear there might be a shake up in the SD public schools...that it is the superintendent that is causing all these issues...but someone told me it should be over shortly..
but Wilmington is very nice too!!

It's insane, isn't it Stacy?? Before I was on LIW I was looking at new construction in the Charleston suburbs. They are a little more expensive there ($160,000 for 3br/2ba 1400-1500 sq ft). I checked the income comparison to NYC and it's about 55% of NYC.
I am seriously counting on heading more south in about 7 years (when DH gets full pension benefits from his job at retirement). Partly for the expense, but really more the quality of life and the climate. I want more mild weather. DH is still thinking about it

Unfortunately my FI cannot leave. His daughter lives here, his ederly parents live here and he works in heating. I, on the other hand, would leave in a minute. We decided to buy something small and then in a few years buy something down south.

My MIL lives in NC. We have considered buying down there (saving for a DP up here and buying a huge house down there) but we also have to keep in mind, the salaries will not compare to what we make now.
Re: Anyone getting so disgusted with the price of homes that you consider going out of state?
honestly...I don't want a huge house....too much to decorate and clean...

Yabbobay-
We bought a condo last year in July and the price has almost gone up $100,000 in just a little over a year. I am so glad that we bought when we did, too. We are in Sorrento Mesa. Our friend just bought a townhouse in San Elijo Hills (San Marcos area) for $348,000. It is not built yet and that does not include the upgrades! Insane! Where have you guys been looking at condos?

We don't either.
Don would actually prefer a townhouse/condo type developement so he won't even have to worry about the upkeep outside. I just want something with a patio so we can BBQ, a washer/dryer in the unit and a room for crafts
I am not sure about the link Stacy posted, but the ones I was looking at would be approx +$40K with land. The townhouses are less expensive.

We're not planning to move out of the metro area, but will probably move to NJ... Not that the houses are a whole lot cheaper there.
I like NYC and I think the career opportunities offered are incomparable with any other location in the US for my field (finance).

One of our insurance agents did that - moved to the Stroudsbourg/Poconos area. There's tons of new developements going up and they are super reasonable. But it's very rural up there, I don't think I would like to live there.
And the commute to manhattan is a fortune - she paid close to $700 a month, 4 hours a day. For that much, I would rather have a higher mortgage payment for someplace out in Suffolk that will eventually go away.

Deirdre/Montauk
I am pissed that we didn't buy when we first started looking...b/c I have seen the $50-100K increase...but I can't dwell...
we actually signed with a condo in the summer in UTC...but at the last minute we dropped out (jets from Miramar and the coaster/amtrack/freighttrain noise was just too much)
we are now actively looking in the La Jolla/UTC area...
how much negotiating were you able to do in this strong market? I have noticed some that have been on the market since Nov/dec
