Anyone getting so disgusted with the price of homes that you consider going out of state?

Original post by 04Bride

We had no intentions of moving to a house for at least a year or so but we look at these prices and it seems like every penny will be going towards the mortgage and we will never have anything left over.
My Fh is now on a North Carolina kick. I have been lookign at sites and teh houses are INCREDIBLE for the amount of money. I would be OK leaving my friends (I figure by this age your friends will be your friends no matter where you live) but I am having a hard time at the thought of leaving my mom. My sister doesn't live far from her but she is not the type to help out nearly as much as I do or would even if I lived a few miles away.
Anyone else going through this?
This is all talk right now for us. But the thing that keeps me thinking about it is the quality of life factor overall would be soooo much better!

Erica-

No negotiating at all! There were about 10 other offers for our place and the asking price was a range. We offered the highest amount in the range, as did 7 other people. The others offered MORE than the asking price range!! We were so lucky to get the place... we had a great real estate agent and our loan guy approved us for 20% down, which we were not doing, and the buyer felt confident that we were legit. Keep looking and don't give up, you will find your perfect place soon!

You don't need as much income in other places. Florida has no city tax (I think), lower sales tax, lower cost of living. There are income/cost of living comparison tables that give a rough idea of the type of salary you need to make in a new place compared to your current location & salary. We are looking into Charleston, SC and according to the tables I found, we need to make about 56% of our current income to maintain the lifestyle we have here down south.

We plan on moving to Georgia...FH has a sister down there and her family. We can get a 4 bdrm 2 1/2 bath house (new construction) for around $160,000...smaller houses as low as $130,000. We loved it down there....and plenty of NY'ers!!!!!

My brother is on a Charlotte NC kick--they went down to visit in Oct and were amazed @ The houses. Personally, I think 12 hours is too far to be from your family (ya have to know my family, we are abnormally close) but whatever. We would never move that far away, we're homebodies. The only place we would consider is PA.

My parents brought us down to Wilimington, NC to look into it about 10 years ago and we were not impressed. They build these huge houses in these gated communities and you leave them and literally across the street in a trailer park. that was 10 years ago though and i'm sure it is much more built up now.

I have such mixed feelings about this issue--it's a heated one! I try not to bring it up around my parents/brother! LOL I understand why people move, it really is insane here to try and buy a house, to work for it and then you're never in it!!

We are officially starting our house hunting this weekend.... we are looking at PA... There are builders offering 3 or 4 bedroom homes on nice lots for 150k-210k.

I'm trying to hold out for sewers/public water as opposed to wells and septic even though it makes the property tax higher.

We have to stay reasonably close to the NYC area because my future step-daughter will stay here.

I want to leave and go to Florida, but my dad would freak b/c he's afraid he would never see his grand daughter, so we're staying. I'm also scared that if I did move out of state and hated it, I would never be able to afford to come back here. One by one my husbands family is moving to FL. I just think I would miss the seasons. Houses here are insane. Yet last night on the news they were talking about affordable housing for immigrants. Not that I'm against immigrants..(just to be clear) but what about us, the people that have stayed this long and pay taxes? Why can't there be affordable housing for us?

I was from LI and DH from Upstate. We realized we couldn't have anythng on LI so we moved here. 20 acres $18,000 where can you get land so cheap? Anyway we built a house here very affordable, I can still drive to see mom 4 hours away and the best part is the past two years, LI has been getting more snow then us

NC is beautiful, I went to school for a year down there (Greenville), and Wilmington is an awesome place, but remember one thing when you move close to the coast..If a hurricane comes your way, you are in trouble!
