I don't think there's anything to 'get' neccessarily. It might just be beauty for beauty's sake.
but I don't find it beautiful. That's what I mean. It's just a bunch of orange flags.Looks like a road construction warning to me
you have to see it in person. it's beautiful
What is beautful about to you? The scale? The repetition?

in person- the why they wave in the breeze, the way the sun hits them and makes them 'glow' at certain times of the day.. the way they highlight the curves of the paths...

Re: Anyone go see the Gates in Central Park?
I don't find it particularly beautiful, but I'm awed by the scale, logistics, the planning and also by the interactive and transitory nature of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's work. I suspect that there is no meaning, it's not supposed to be 'pretty' and that's it's mostly just a test of wills, endeavor versus time, that sort of thing.
They wrapped the coasts of several Florida islands in pink plastic, and they opened yellow unmbrellas in California simultaneously as blue umbrellas in Japan. There's a silly abstractness to their work. It's like they have that mentality of 'Why did you climb Mt Everest... because it's there.'
I guess what I mean to say is that it's a cool idea.

Jeanne-Claude said that it was just something they thought would be interesting and is not suppose to be thought about so much, but simply enjoyed. I appreciated what she was saying. People(myself included) always search for meaning in art and sometimes miss the fact that it is just what it appears to be.

Heidla, thank you so much! I was really hoping it was just something cool they decided to do! My FH and I were talking about it and he said 'But what does it mean?' I said 'Does it need a meaning to matter?' And the possibility of it having no deeper, philisophical meaning really annoyed him!
You should hear me get all worked up and pissy about the 'meaning' of novels and short stories.

But, did you hear how much it cost???
I'm all for meaningless, but I'd like a little thought process for my $22million, thank you very much!!!

Re: Anyone go see the Gates in Central Park?
It was funded completely by Christos and Claude. The city is going to make out great on this deal. People are coming from all over to NYC during one of the slowest months. It is providing a little economic boost and costing the city nothing.
I agree that if my tax dollars had gone to pay for it that I would want a little meaning. Then again, sometimes just seeing something simple and pretty is refreshing compared to daily life.

I may go to check it out. My office is right across the street from Central Park.

That's what my FH thinks, but he's curious, and I'm dying to see it. I think it's crazy and pointless and unwieldy. Also I'm curious to see how jarring the bright orange is against the dreariness of Feb in NYC!
My DH thinks the same thing...I just think it will be cool to see. We are so close to it...why miss it? Plus it will make for a fun day in the city...we plan to hit the new moma too and go out for a nice dinner.

I heard some people say that there is extra money being spent for police overtime, but am not sure if that is true.
I don't think this is really worth traveling to NY just to see.
I don't really like absurdity trying to be important. It seems sort of narcissistic. like 'hey we're the people that like to put brightly colored things in people's cities. . .'
I feel like a lot of peopel think it is impressive, b/c they feel they are supposed to.
but then again I didn't appreciate the giant cheese grater in the Boston Musem of Fine art either.

Yeah, I know they were funding it themselves. And really, who am I to tell people how to blow their excessive millions I just think it's just a wee bit OTT

Re: Anyone go see the Gates in Central Park?
The park was SO crowded this past weekend! The city is going to make a lot of $$$ from it. We tried to get some dinner on the UWS at about 6pm last night and every restaurant was packed! You could tell a lot of people were from out of town.
I think it's something you have to see to judge. The photos in the paper give it no justice.
I also think anything that gets people outside and talking about art and gets their mind off of TV, the War, Politics, etc is a good thing!

To be perfectly honest, I gave up trying to understand 'Modern Art' a long time ago. I think that if you do something like The Gates and come out and say that it is just meant to be pretty I can deal with that. If you try to tell me that the series of 12 blank canvases are meant to 'represent the loneliness of the human spirit that binds us all together Blah, Blah ,Blah' I call you a BS artist , but an artist? Not sure.

I agree with tourist, I don't get it either. Maybe it looks nice in person, but 21 million dollars. Ridiculous if you ask me!

Re: Anyone go see the Gates in Central Park?
I saw it last weekend, by accident, actually. I've never really been into modern art, and this is no exception. I thought it was lame and meaningless, and the bright orange looked so out of place. Like someone said, it looks like oversized emergency cones or something like that.
