Anyone go to St Louis De Montfort RC Church in Sound Beach?
It was my childhood parish and we just christened my nephew there last weekend. Deacon Joe Bartolotto did the ceremony - he used to be our school principal in middle school. He gave the worst service I have ever seen!!! It was embarrassing and even infuriating. At one point he was holding my nephew and launched into an anti-abortion speech. Now I know that's the church's position on abortion - but, please, oh please DO NOT make an example of an innocent baby!!!! It was so inappropriate and so not the time to do that - the day was about bringing new members into the church community, not about any political agenda! He also went on and on about communism and all sorts of other things. I was so offended!

I don't know that church, but I have seen this trend a lot lately, with overly political homilies. In the church I went to in Mt. Vernon, there was an anti abortion lecture durign one mass, and people started applauding, which just seemed wrong to me, & at the church I almost got married in, it was during Catholic schools week & they had the principal speak, during mass, which I thought wa s inapporpriate & then basically said you have no excuse to send your kids to public school unless you are poor.
I was afraid of something like that during our weding, which is one of the reasons we went elsewhere, but DH thought they wouldn't do it during a ceremony, but your church didn't seem to mind duringa Christening.

That is appalling and yet par for the course at the exact same time. And people wonder why I'm a lapsed Catholic.

Same here.
As appalling as it is, it's not surprising... which in itself makes it all the more obnoxious.
I actually went back one time about 3 years ago...and I walked out of the service because of the unabashed political rants masked as a homily.

I absolutely agree.
The pastor at my childhood parish made a habit out of preaching about his pet politcal agendas. On his off days he'd brag about cutting his brother out of his life because he was a Protestant who married a Methodist.

Ahhhh, yet another piece of evidence that institutional religion is in fact exclusive, not inclusive. This is why I want to raise my kids Buddhist

WOW!! That is rude...I don't think its the church's fault as a whole...some of these priests have this holier than thou attitude and have their own agenda and use any forum to promote it
