Re: anyone have cookbook suggestions
I found a great one! Its called the Flavor Bible. Its not exactly a 'cook book' BUTTTTTT it is a book that tells you what flavors work together the best. As far as recipes, I always go on Emeril.com, MarthaStewart.com, and Foodnetwork.com
Not only does it have recipes for EVERYTHING, but it tells you about ingredients, how to store them shelf life, different techniques, etc. It's a great all purpose cookbook.

Re: anyone have cookbook suggestions
My friend just got me the BEST cookbook - it's called the Kitchen Bible.
I hate cookbooks that don't have pictures, because I like to see what I am going to make. This one has pictures for every single item (and there are a ton!) and it also has tons of basics and tips for the beginner. It's like 10lbs, but so worth it!

ITA The Joy of Cooking is my cooking bible!

'How to Boil Water' put out by the food network is a really really good cookbook. Lots of pictures, recipes, tips, hints, shopping suggestions. I have given that book as a gift so many times!

Re: anyone have cookbook suggestions
We have two cookbooks that my ILs got us for Christmas two years ago -- How to Cook Everything and How to Cook Everything Vegetarian. (both by Bittman)
They're fabulous because you just look up the main ingredient and they tell you basically how to cook it and you can create all your own recipes from that as a starting point. I cook all the time now and they are a huge help!
I don't really like cookbooks where you have to buy certain ingredients all the time -- I'm more of a cook and learn to cook type.

Re: anyone have cookbook suggestions
The Bittman books are both wonderful, and I'd suggest anything by Cook's Illustrated (especially the 30-Minute volume).
For more upscale dishes (though not too expensive), Ina Garten's very first Barefoot Contessa Cookbook never, ever fails.
