Anyone have Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy?

Anyone have Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy?

I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes about 3 weeks ago in my 24th week of pregnancy after the doctor did a 1 hr glucose tolerance test.

I guess I'm looking for someone who has had experience with GD because I have some questions. I've been testing my blood sugar for a week now and it's usually well under the max range they want it to be, and I wasn't even able to really follow the nutriotion plan to a T because I got married on Saturday and honeymooned until yesterday.

So I'm looking for someone who knows a think or two about what my numbers should be! Please respond to me on here or send me an FM!

THanks,
Melissa

I had GD. Feel free to ask me any questions.

I am trying to remember what my numbers had to be. I think it was 90 upon wake up and under 120-2 hours after meals. I can check my info when I get home.

Did you not take a 3 hour test? I think I got a 170 on my one hour - making me have to take the 3 hour. I think if you score really high - like over 200 than you don't take the 3 hour and you are assumed to have diabetes.

THanks for replying. I didn't take the 3 hour test. I had a 186 after the 1hour and they said it was high enough that I wouldn't need to take the 3 hour test.

They said under 95 before breakfast, and under 120 after 2 hours from each meal. So far I've been well within those ranges. Usually around 75 for the fasting, and about 90-110 for the 2 hour. The weird thing is that I haven't really been watching my diet that much because I got married on Saturday and was on honeymoon until yesterday, so I was eating out a lot. I really wish they'd have given me the 3 hour to make sure I really have GD, but the doctor said it wasn't necessary and I called up the nutritionist they refered me to and she said it wasn't necessary either.

How big was your baby when he was born?

Re: Anyone have Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy?

My baby was 7lbs 2oz but three weeks early. So not too big. He was born hypoglycemic so he was in the NIUC until his sugars were better. It was sad to leave him there but he was totally fine and healthy otherwise. My dr was surpised he had it since he wasn't so big...

I never was a bad eater - I don't eat alot of carbs and junk. I didn't met many of the common risk factors for the disease. But I got it. I followed the strict diet (hatig every minute of it) and my numbers were soooo low - they thought I may not have had it. But ever now and then I would spike but it was on weird things. Like I ate a big Italian dinner (I was very depressed over this whole GD diet and since my numbers were so low - my high risk dr told me to splurge one night and he didn't care if I spiked here and there) - and I didn't spike - pasta, veal parm, bread and salad. One day I had a tuna sandwich with a small fruit salad on wheat bread - I spiked - so go figure! I was convinced fruits like melons spiked me - I was addicted to fruit early in my 1st trimester.

Also - went away after pregnancy - woohoo!

Re: Anyone have Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy?

My Diabetes Nutritionist that I met with actually told me to try and avoid fruits as much as possible. She said no fruit juices at all (which stinks cuz I was totally diggin snapple fruit punch!) and no fruits in the AM, only after 12 noon and ONLY WITH A MEAL, not as a snack.

The no fruit thing is really hard because you think of it as a healthy thing and you don't think of it as something bad.

Interestingly enough, my blood sugar reached it's highest sicne I've been testing it at 126 the other day, after I had a tuna sandwich on wheat bread. I barely ever eat tuna because of that whole mercury thing, but I was just craving it the other day. It's interesting that yours spiked after that also.

How low were your normal levels and how high were your spikes?

As far as fruit, my nutritionalist had me have it 3 times a day but small portions and with a snack or meal. So for a snack I would have peanut butter and a small apple and a carb. So I went to small apples, small oranges and those 4oz fruit snacks or applesauce with no sugar (yuck). Mine were also all after noon. I stayed away from melons and stuff once I had GD.

Like you said, I always thought of fruit as my healthy snack. I didn't eat chocolate and cakes too much - I loved fruit...who knew...

Weird you had the spike on tuna! so strange.

My numbers were usually in the low 100's in or lower like high 90's when I was really strict on the diet. The days I cheated which wasn't often - they would be higher closer to 115-120. I only spiked 2 times...and with the tuna it was slightly over 120 and the other time it was outrageously high.

My GD was caught kind of late and I had the baby 3 weeks early so luckily - it was only about 5 weeks of the diet for me.

Re: Anyone have Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy?

So far my levels have been really low! Usually like 75-90 in the am when I wake up, and between 85-100 with meals. I was on my honeymoon last week, and even with eating out and really not following the diet, it was always pretty low, and now that I'm home again and following the diet a little more strictly, yesterday it was like 73 waking up, 81 after breakfast, 90 after lunch, and 87 after dinner.

I am really hoping that I don't run into complications because of the GD. i'm anxious to get another sonogram to find out the baby's weight because my 23 week sono, before i knew I had GD, the baby was 1 lb 10 oz wihch is pretty big, and the nutritionist and midwife at the diabetes center said that i'll get more frequent sonos because of the gd, so i'm just waiting for them to happen! i'm really curious as to how big this baby is at this point. I'm going on 28 weeks now.

How old is your son now? he looks beautiful from the pictures!

Good for you - sounds like things are going well for you!!!! The good thing about GD, was lots of sonograms!! I loved seeing my little guy so much!!

My son is 5 months. The picture in my profile is a little old - he is about 2 months there. I mostly post on LIF (Ling Island Families now) so I have more updated ones there every now and then.
