Anyone have hard wood floors installed?

Anyone have hard wood floors installed?

Hi ladies! Just trying to do some research here... has anyone had hard wood floors installed. From what I've been told, they come in pieces like Pergo would, but they are REAL wood. I'm curious to see how much it would cost me... I have about 500 sq. feet that needs to be covered.

Anyone?

Also does anyone have ENGINEERED wood floors? Not pergo where it's laminated, but it's layers of engineered wood and on top is REAL. If so, what do you think of this?

Oh, I don't know much... but I'll ask my friend tonight, he owns a construction co. and I'll let you know tom. night what he says.
I do know it does come in 'slivers' and they have to be layed down piece by piece. (If I'm understanding you correctly?)

See you tonight!

Re: Anyone have hard wood floors installed?

I just had mine put in this summer, and they were laid plank by plank rather than in pieces like Pergo.

I'm not quite sure how much they cost because we had a lot of work done and paid for it all together. I'm sure I have an itemized bill somewhere. I'll look for it.

Thanks Jenn, one more question...

Did they lay the wood on a slab or do you have a basement and the floor they layed the pieces on was would to begin with?

Sorry for all the annoying questions, but I actually got my DH to agree to looking for floors on Sunday! woopee!

Lauren,

You can lay the floors on slab as long as you have the underlayment. It is good to shop around b/c prices per square foot vary. Also its really important to measure the space properly to make sure you are getting enough cartons.

Hubby and I did it ourselves one weekend (but only in 1 room). We got it from Home Depot.

ETS: that installed is about $6 a sq. foot. You can cut that cost in half if you do it yourself. I don't know know too much about engineered floors.

Irene, thanks... what is underlayment? LOL... what room did you do it in? How did it come out? I'm thinking I may have to POP in and check it out! Plus see the new house anyway! :o)

For installment I'll probably have John and my brother do it, so that'll cut the costs... and I can hopefully get John to ok this!

Underlayment is the foam that goes under the flooring. This will help buffer any sound, and also even out your floor against the slab. (Hopefully your floor is level).

I have a videotape if you want to borrow it but it is for the clickless/glueless floors. We did it in our den (now future baby room) and it looks great. Actually Richsbride saw it (and she's an expert on these things) and she said we did a good job!

We have hard wood floors and they came in pieces. Is that the question? I don't know much more.

Thanks Irene, it sounds GREAT ! I think I'll take you up on that video, I'll just wait until John gives me the OK! I REALLY REALLY want knew floors! The carpet from the old owners is MAGENTA, ugh hello?! for a living room and dining room?? GEEZ, how am I supposed to go furniture shopping with carpet like that???

Dgtlsunshine - yes that's what I was asking... I was also wondering how you like them

Re: Anyone have hard wood floors installed?

We are on a slab, and had to have a plywood subfloor built to lay the hardwood on top of.

One good thing about that is that houses on slabs normally have cold floors, but my LR and DR floors are toasty warm now!
