Anyone have the 'HUSAR' storage unit from Ikea? (now with rough draft pic)
Im thinking of chucking our crappy mismatched shelves and beareaus in our bedroom for this storage system from Ikea. We have a small bedroom and lots of stuff so this seems like an economical way to take care of it..but Im curious to see if anyone has one. Sometimes the IKEA stuff works great but sometimes its real crap and falls apart.
*These photos are just different combinations of the components...we wouldnt arrange them like this or use these pieces exactly butyou get the idea.

I do not have that particular unit but I have a few other wood pieces from IKEA and have always been very pleased with the quality. I have a ABO coffee table, tv stand and buffet (w/o hutch). My bedroom dresser and night stands are also from IKEA. (we didn't have a lot of cash so we became a frequent customer). My pieces are 3 years old and are very sturdy. I've actually received a few compliments on the quality.
I also have the Ektorp couches - bought the same time - and they have not held up well at all and I'm ready to ditch them. They were a total waste of my cash (I'm sooooo annoyed )
Anyway...to answer your question...I think you'll do well with the wood pieces. Good luck!

I don't have it, but there are things from IKEA that are well made...you have to look for the real wood...we have a dresser and lingerie dresser and they are both very sturdy and well made...you just have to really inspect the feel at the store room
good luck

I agree with Erica. You just have to check to make sure it is sturdy and all wood. Sometimes some of those units have plastic draws or press board We have an all wood hutch from IKEA and it is holding up great

Stef, I was looking at those last week...they seem pretty good quality wise!

Thanks girls. I think the quality is okay from what I can tell - so I guess it should be okay.
If anyone has this or something like it, I'd love to see photos of what components you used and how.

Are those unfinished wood? If so, what are your plans for them? Will you stain or paint them?

I think there is some finish on them but they are meant to look like knotty pine. Would leave them as they are now (i am a wood freak) since my bedroom is a dark green and the light wood would be okay against it. At some point, I might paint it but no time soon.

i do not have those pieces, but i do have other pieces for my bedroom (can't remember the name of the set, but i've seen it in many apartments i've been to). we have moved twice with this furniture & it is falling apart. we've tried to fix the drawers so they slide out properly but we've had no luck. they are now very difficult to open.
i think ikea is a great deal especially if you are planning on replacing it in the (near) future. but i wouldn't advise moving it to another home. ours is collapsing.

I didn't have that line but I did have a the Ivar wall unit system years ago and it was really sturdy! Because it was modular I think it would move well (belonged to an ex-bf)

I have never felt that the stuff from IKEA was crap, anything I have ever bought was quite sturdy, I'd imagine this would be as well.
Edited to ask: Are you using this for books/mags/papers/etc and not for clothes I assume? Will it be squished in there with your dressers as well?

Re: Anyone have the 'HUSAR' storage unit from Ikea?
We are going to use it for clothing. Any reason you think that it wont work?
We have 3 really old crappy dressers (hand me downs) in my bedroom now. They dont hold all our stuff, dont match and are just crap. So we want to get something that looks put together and has a lot of storage...all the dresser sets we have seen (even at cheap stores like Ikea) are really pricey if we get 3 or 4 bigs ones and that is going to look weird when they are all lined up. So i figure this will look better.

I think it would work Stef and I love the idea/look of it but I wouldn't personally want my clothes out on an open shelf, I would be too obsessed to keep it neat nor would I have the patience to do that. The drawers are great but I would bet they aren't deep and could hold sweaters could they?

The drawers arent super large which I know but I almost prefer a smaller drawer to keep things neat.
I also would use this configuration at all. I was sketching it up last night and I would probably do:
-3 sets of drawers ( 6 drawers each - total 18) + -3 shelves of drawers (2 drawers each - total 6)
-On top of the center set of drawers, I would put a closed cabinet for larger items like sweaters, etc..
-On top of the right set of drawers and open shelf with some wicker or cloth bins for random items and books
-On top of the left set of drawers, an open shelf for our tv and cable box, etc..
- On both sides, two narrow shelving units which we would stock with more of those bins for things like socks, etc.. with a shelf or two for books and photos.
And then I would get a few of those cheap lights to put on the top of the cabinets for added effect as well as a bunch of lined up photos so its not completely bare up at the ceiling.
Does that makes sense?
Something like this rough, rough draft:

How large is the wall in your bedroom? this configuration looks huge.

The wall is 13 feet long. So this is about 11 feet long.

I like your draft...and by setting them up like that, I am sure you would have a ton of space for everything you need. I would really like something like that as well.

I think those look really nice. It seems like a great solution for extra storage. I really like the way they look.
