If you puchase the TiVo box from Tivo.com or a store like Best Buy, the monthly service fee is $12.95. You can also purchase a lifetime subscription for the that box for $300 (It is not transferable if you buy a newer model at a later date).The lifetime subcription ends up paying for itself in 23 months.
I am not sure what the cost is when you buy a Direct TV box.

I can't wait till it comes in. I ordered the Series 2 - 40 Hour Tivo. I ALSO ordered the Toshiba DVD player / TiVo combo for our bedroom. That one has an 80 hour DVR in it.
I can't wait! I went with this option because you need to pay a monthly fee for each DVR (Digital video recorder aka TiVo) you have that you hook up. However, the DVD/DVR combo comes with very basic features for free, so you can still manipulate live TV with that machine for free. I'll try that for a while before I subscribe, but I think with the DVD, I'll end up doing the $299 lifetime option.
BTW - I ordered mine from Best Buy (online) it should be here in a few days.
