Anyone have TMJ?

Sorry about this boring post, but my jaw is KILLING me.

I have had this for awhile, but it normally only bothers me in the middle of the night (it wakes me up and I roll over and it stops). Sometimes I will get a dull ache during the day.
But today it hurts SO much.
What do you take for the pain?

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

I have it bad, and theres not much you can do but massage the joint muscles...It will lossen them so they are not so tight and it does help a little. Also my Dr told me HEAT is best .

Go see a chiropracter. They will show you how to lossen the joint and so it goes back into place so to speak.

I hear your pain though, It can get real bad.

On a funnier note. FH can hear me grinding my teeth from 4 rooms away and he tells me he's going to beat me every night if I don't stop..

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

Dh says I grind my teeth too.
It only flares up when I am really stressed, I used to have it bad during midterms and finals.
I know whose fault it is this time

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

I can symapthize. I'm lucky mine isn't that bad but sometimes it will aggrivate me when I'm eating and the clicking is awful. Then sometimes I can't open my mouth more than a little bit because it will hurt too much and my jaw will snap.

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

I suffer from TMJ as well. I bought a book years back called 'TMJ The Jaw Connection, The Overlooked Diagnosis.' It has a lot of great remedies for alleviating the pain and ways to find out what causes your symptoms. I recommend all of you to pick it up!

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

I have it too and it can get pretty awful on some days. I usually take extra strength tylenol when it gets really bad.

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

I have it too. In the past I would grind my teeth so hard it would wake FH up at night. I got a night guard for my mouth and it has helped so much. I do not wake up with the pain and headaches I used to. It has also saved my teeth.

I just got a night guard too... and can finally sleep the whole night!!! i never really had it before a few months ago (STRESS!!)

Also... if you chew gum- Don't! and food that are hard to chew... it makes it worse (like steak, etc...). FH has it too...but not that bad.. it was worse when he used to chew gum all the time

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

~Use heat (those microwave buckwheat/flax pillows are great).
~Get a facial massage by someone who specializes in TMJ massage. (It works WONDERS).
~Feel Better!

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

I've got TMJ too and can totally sympathize with your discomfort. When my jaw is bothering me, I try my best to massage the joints and apply heat. I used to see a chiropractor and he would adjust it for me. It helped a lot. Good luck.

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

I got it from my dentist.. he took a mold of my mouth, so its specially made. I think that That's the best way to go-- not to get a generic one because that may irritate it even more.

the only complaint i do have... it that when i wake up in the morning, for the first half hour (if even that much).. my jaw kind of feels a little 'off line'. i dont know though if thats b/c i just got the mouth guard and i'm still adjusting, or if it has to do with my widsom teeth (they've caused my mouth to feel a little out of wack lately).

but to me, its worth it, b/c it had been so bad that i was waking up numerous times throughout the night when my jaw would SLAM shut (felt like a spazm or something, but it was really hurting my teeth)... and since i have gotten the guard, i have had None of that (also, since its made just for My mouth... it fits naturally, so it doesnt bother me when im going to sleep).

hope this was a little helpful

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

It is helpful!

But I wonder if I would be able to sleep with it in....

I tried one of the generic ones awhile ago (the ones you heat up and mold to your teeth) and I couldn't sleep with it.

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

i really dont even notice it on (even the first night i had it)....

to me, it looks and fits just like those clear braces they have now (they ones that advertise that no one can even tell that your wearing it)

i think its a Huge difference from teh genric one, b/c it fits perfectly over your teeth,, so you dont really notice that theres a foreign object in your mouth

Re: Anyone have TMJ?

ohhhh and i've also noticed a difference too during the day. For some reason i havent been getting as many aches and pains. I dont think the guard, in general, is supposed to make that kind of difference... but its noticeable to me that its become less frequent during the day as well
