We are finishing grad school and have no plans of buying a house for a while. It's wierd, because sometimes I feel like I don't want to decorate, or use any of our new wedding gifts. I feel like I want to save it for the house. But who knows when that will be? I'm trying so hard to get out of that attitude so I can enjoy the things we received. But part of me wants to keep them shiny and new until we get a house. Anyone else know what I mean?

Re: Anyone here married but still living in an apt?
Yes, we live in a small apartment in Queens. We thought about buying a house and then realized it wasn't realistic right now. I did do decorating, but not much and then sort of stopped when we were thinking about buying a house. Now that I realize we will be in the apartment longer, I want to finish decorating so it feels more like a 'home.' We have also been using the gifts because without them we would have nothing, LOL. Don't wait to use your stuff until you have a house because you don't know when that will be!

Yeah, that is true. The only thing is that we don't actually need to use them because we lived together for 4 years so we have cookware and stuff, just not the nicest. So most of the gifts we got were upgrades to what we already have.

We live in a house, but it is a rented house
We aren't buying anything any time soon, we found this place and it is nice b/c we can stay here for a while, which is good.
But we just moved in in June, but before that, we lived in a teeny apartment and I felt the same way that you did. In fact, once decided we were going to move, I just gave up decorating, etc.

we will be in our tiny apartment for a while after the wedding. all of the gifts we received for our engagement are at our parents houses....we just don'thave the room. the kitchenaid mixer is the size of the counter space we have for crying out loud. as much as i want to use all the stuff as soon as i get it, it's just realistic at this point and will probably have to wait until we have a house.

Yup we are in an apartment too. Buying a house at these prices is just not in the cards for us right now. We are going to wait & see what happens with the market.

We're renting. We live in a 2 story house and have the yard and driveway. We want to buy but just can't afford a house at these prices. I actually started using everything from my shower right after the shower. I couldn't wait!

Let me tell you ladies, it makes me feel so much better to see that others are renting. Sometimes I feel like we are the only ones when I see all these post about people buying houses and it makes me feel so depressed!

I know exactly what you mean. DH and I are also in careers (grad school and academia) that causes us to move around a lot for jobs. I just want to settle somewhere in a house and enjoy married life!

I know exactly what you mean. We currently live in an apartment in Midtown Manhattan. And all of our bridal shower & wedding gifts are in “storage” at my in-laws house; I don’t want to use them until we buy our house. We are just starting the process of buying a house, so realistically speaking we will not be moving in for about a year. I knew this going in so I only registered for things that I knew I would want 1year from now, I also did not register for any decorative items or furniture, since I don’t know what the house will look like.

we just moved...into another apartment and we will be here until we can afford to buy a house...probably another two years. we've opened all of my shower gifts and are using them happily. and we've decorated really nicely....but budget-wise. we do realize as we are decorating that this isn't our house, just our apartment...so we didnt go overboard.

Re: Anyone here married but still living in an apt?
We rent, and will for another 1-1.5 years. We used only the things that we needed to replace (i.e. a tea kettle and a really good blanket for our bed). Everything else we are saving for our house. We registered for neutral colors and no decorative stuff because we don't know what our house is going to look like yet. I just know that if I use it now, I'll want to buy new when we get a house. That said, if our time horizon was longer, we would start using stuff now. If wouldn't make much sense to me to 'save it' for 3 or 5 years when it might need to be replaced because styles have changed or gotten better, etc. I say if you are buying a house in the near future, save it (it will making moving easier because it is all packed anyway and you can just throw out your old stuff). If you are farther from buying a place, use it.

we have been in a tiny apt in queens and are moving to a house in hicksville..but we're renting. buying, at least on LI, is just out of the question right now.
i fully plan on decorating...why sit in a space and hate the way it looks? it will only make you hate it and feel 'less than' for not having bought a home yet MORE.

We live in an apartment by choice...we have no interest in a house....if and when we're ready to buy something bigger - it'll most likely be a condo/co-op.
ETA: we're city folks...

We are living in an apt in California. My DH is doing a rotation for his job and we know it isn't permanent so all of the stuff we registered for is in his parent's basement in NY.
But when we go back to the NY, we will buy an apt in the city. I'm a city gal as well.

Oh, I mean we HAVE done some decorating, we just haven't gone crazy with buying a ton of paintings or some of the other art I'd like to have once we own a house. It's mainly that we have a ton of wedding gifts at my ILs house that we don't have any room for, and for the things we can store in our apt, I kind of want to save them. But maybe that is silly

Re: Anyone here married but still living in an apt?
We moved into a new apartment right before the wedding. We're not planning on buying a house in the near future for a number of reasons: 1. We love our apartment and we're only 2 people, how much space do we need? 2. We couldn't afford a house if we wanted one (small houses in our neighborhood are going for upwards of $600,000) 3. We may relocate in a few years and don't want to go through all of that just to sell and move a whole house full of stuff to a new city. We use all of our stuff that we got from my showers and the wedding - new bedding, new dishes, new cookware. We even registerd for new furniture. Just because it's not a house doesn't mean you shouldn't make your apartment into a home.

Yup, we have been in a two bedroom apt. for about 2 years now and plan on staying there for another 1-2 years.
I really want to buy a house, but we are not financial ready.....who is on Long Island??
I have all my bridal shower stuff put away in the spare room and I am not going to use it till we are in a house.
