You know what might be a good one? 'The Body' it's a novella by Stephen King, it's the story 'stand by me' was based on. Very make centered, action, etc, but still an intelligent read.

Hatchet by Gary Paulson, he actually has a lot of books but its about a boy who survives a plane crash surviving in the wild.

That's a good one.. or 'my Side of the Mountain'..but I read that and the hatchet in about 4th grade..so I don't know. In 9th grade I read a lot of Tom Robbins but that's a lot of sexual stuff

The Milagro Beanfield War is also a good story, but I forget if it is for that age group... I think so.
