The Count of Monte Cristo?

Not sure what level they're on, but the Princess Bride is a wonderful book, much more indepth than the movie.

I remember reading The Red Badge of Courage, I think

'Lord of the Flies' by William Golding
'Farenheit 451' by Ray Bradbury
'Animal Farm' by George Orwell
'To Kill a Mockingbird' Harper Lee
'The Yellow Wallpaper' by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (considered more of a novella)
'The Bell Jar' Sylvia Plath

Any of the Shakesperean comedies

I love A Separate Peace!

Also, if it doens;t have to be 9th grade leve, then Harry potter.

or if you want to give them an early start, you can ahve them read the version of Frankenstein that has the SAT words highlighted and defined.

This might be too voilent, etc, but maybe Interview with a Vampire?

It's got blood and guts and stuff teenage boys will like, but it also has a oretty high reading level, a lot of history and mythology (so this can be incoporated in lessons, or inspire them to look up or read some mthology) and it's part of a series that will inspire further reading. The only thing I'm not sure about is I know some of the Vampire Chronicles books have sexual content. I don't specifically remeber anyting like that in Interview, but it's possible it's there.

A lot of Paul Zindel's books might work. I remember one called _The Pigman_ that was particularly popular amongst the boys at my junior high school.

Mine too! (along with 'The Chocolate War').

If you're looking for something other than a classic, one of my other favorites is 'A Wrinkle in Time'. My nephew is reading it and he loves it.
Another good one is 'Eragon' by Christopher Paolini, who was only 17 when he wrote it. 'Eragon' is book one of a trilogy.

I love anything by Paul ZIndel. I still read his books when I'm looking for a quick read.

Re: anyone know a great book for ninth grade boys?

I loved a Seperate Peace, but both my brother & my husband hated it! SO, mayeb boys don't like it as much as we think they would?

My brother LOVED Lord of the Flies in HS.

To Kill a Mockingbird was popular with the boys & girls when we read it in 8th grade.

The Chocolate War was also popular, b/c our teacher told us it was banned at one point. Teenagers love that kind of controversy.

ETA:Is a Wrinkle in Time too young? I read it younger I think, but then I read it as an adult too, so , maybe not.
