Anyone know about Charlotte, NC?

I post on here somewhat regularly, but had to change my name since I know at least one coworker comes on here.

My man has been approached about a job in Charlotte. We don't know anything about the area. Where can I go to learn more?

Re: Anyone know about Charlotte, NC?

I have several relatives who live in Charlotte, including my aunt and uncle who both moved there from LI. They all rave about the area and while I have not been there I have heard nothing but positives.

I know that housing prices and taxes are very reasonable, although I do believe that the schools are not as good as LI (but not very many anywhere else are). My cousin is a math teacher at a private school in Charlotte and both of his children attend that school instead of public schools. He and his wife have lived in Charlotte for more than 20 years and love it.

They do experience all four seasons although winter is much milder than here with not much snow. If you do an internet search I am sure that you will find many sites that will give you info about the area.

Re: Anyone know about Charlotte, NC?

I lived in Charlotte for a year. I have to be honest, Charlotte was not for me, so warning some of my opinions may be biased.

Charlotte is a very nice city - clean, affordable housing. The shcools are just OK - in some areas you may have to look at private schools. Charlotte is a very active city in promoting charties. There are always fun fundraisers going on which involve the whole city. I thought this was awesome and I have not seen this level of involvement in other cities I have lived in.

For me there were two big drawbacks about Charlotte - (1) no water/ocean and very few parks. On weekends I had to go 1 1/2 hours away for any hiking or contact with the great outdoors (2) Charlotte shuts down very early. Not many people go out during the week. I found that Sunday-Thursdays I was bored.

If you have any specific questions - please feel free to FM me - I still have friends who live there who love it.

Thank you for the responses. We found some basic information on the web, but I was skeptical since it's from the chamber, local government, etc.

I wanted to hear things like what you said. We hadn't seen anything about how the schools may not be so hot, the nightlife is somewhat lacking, etc. It helps us to make a better decision.

My sister did her residency down there. When we went to visit her, the bars were very close by. There seemed to be a lot of people out. It is very pretty down there and she loved living down there too.

It is land locked but Lake Norman is on the outskirts. It is a growing city, and I've heard great things about it. And yes, it is very affordable.

Re: Anyone know about Charlotte, NC?

We currently live in the Raleigh area, and lived and worked in the Charlotte area the first year we lived down here. I personally didn't care for Charlotte itself. I worked in a nice part of Charlotte, but I wouldn't live in there. It's not really bad, but not that affordable anymore. It's very congested. We lived just outside the border of NC) of Charlotte in Lake Wylie, SC. We loved it. I heard it's even better now. It took me about 1/2 an hour getting to work. Look into that area, and also Mooresville, Lake Norman, Cornelius area. A lot of NY's live there. It's really nice there. That whole area is. Lake Wylie is S. of Charlotte, and the other towns are N. of Charlotte. Currently we live in Cary NC, which is outside of Raleigh. It's another part of NC that the Northerners live in. I like it here a lot better though.

Good luck!
