Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

Ok... i'm going to be working less at my job and i really need to get a skill... (quickly)

Anyway, so i'd be interested in bartending.... but does anyone know how to 'get into' that?

Like, will some places hire you for just a night or two a week?

(i also have to learn HOW TO bartend, but thats easier to learn than actually finding a job im sure)

any info is appreciated! thanks!

Re: Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

My friend went to a bartender school for a few weeks. I think it was on LI though. I am sure there are bartending schools in NYC. Good luck!

Re: Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

im a bartender-pt now and have been for 8 years.. i went to bartending school- waste of $$ everything i learned i learned behind the bar. I learned a little at the school butI basically walked in to places i was interested in and showed my face....my dads friend owned a bar an di worked there monday night football. i really got my start there. i went to bartending school with my friend and we had fun but they do charge $$... Its a lot of fun bartending- you get caught up inthe scene and $$ easily so be careful. Ive always worked at bars and clubs- drinks are different there then restaurants- easier....
fm me if you need any more info

Re: Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

I just wrote a ton of info, then I had to log back in..
basically, I don't think anyone needs the school unless you are going to be working in a fine dining atmosphere. Whenever I bartended with people who went to school they knew a whole lot about proper glasses, and recommending after dinner drinks.
I started in a steakhouse, and through the grapevine heard of other opportunites. DH was a bar back at a resort, then got moved up to bartender, then on the side would also do private parties.
My cousin was a bartender at Applebee's in SI, he got referred to a job at the Pearl Room in Brooklyn, he did very well there. Now he is an accountant, but every summer on the weekends, he bartends at the Tiki bar on the Jersey Shore and makes a killing. I think you just have to start somewhere, then you will be in the loop. Maybe apply at a cafe, restaurant or bar for their afternoon hours. Also, don't hesitate to tell them that you have prior experience. You will pick it up in your first hour of being there. So don't let the fact that you have no experience hinder you from getting hired. tell them you worked a beer tub or went around with shots, anything..HTH

Re: Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

I have been a career bartender for over 10 years and I have worked at some of the top lounges/bar in NYC. Not to mention out of state at some excellent Ski resorts. Now maybe I'm being a little sensitive. But I take offense to someone thinking that bartending is just so mindless and simple that anyone who feels like it could just pick it up. If your good looking you might be able to get a job somewhere but you probably would barely break $100 a shift. Any reputable place requires a lot of experience, and some bars in NYC require up to 3 years NYC experience. A lot of people have it in there minds that bartenders just 'make drinks' they're wrong!!! Anyone can make a drink, not everyone is cut out to bartend! Drink making is the simple part, personality, intelligence and common sense make up the rest. You have to be able to spot a trouble maker right away, and notice if someone is one drink away from crossing THAT line, and sometimes having to subdue and remove a 250lbs man (without getting hurt), also know who will respond to sarcasm and who you have to be straight with, how to flirt but NOT to much, how to make the women in the bar feel just as comfortable (if not More) comfortable than the men in the bar.Now those are just a few of the others skills you have to possess. I'll get off my high horse now. Like I said you may be able to find work in a smaller town bar and gain some experience and you might end up doing very well. But if you're just looking for something simple for extra money I would suggest waitressing. Now I'm not saying that they have it so easy, however many restaurants are willing to train wait staff without experience and you can make a lot of money. Whereas bartending jobs don't really do training for the most part. And with waitressing you could probably get a job at a better place and you really could make alot of extra cash. Any way sorry I went off on a tangent but I do take offense when people trivialize bartending it's a tougher job then most people realize. Good luck!!

Re: Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

thanks everyone!!!

andrea.. i already did waitressing and i dont like it. i was gonna be a bartender there, but i quit just before that was supposed to happen..
i never for once thought that bartending was easy or simple or mindless. im well aware of all the things you mentioned and i think i would be good at it. from making drinks, to personality, to common sense, etc... ive been wanting to get into it for a while now, but never felt i was 'old enough' to do it in the city in a true bar rather then a restuarant atmosphere. i DO need it as a second job, but nt to make 'fast cash'. i just know that its the type of job where they would need you only for a few days a week.... also, i may want to end up switching over to bartending, but i wont know until i start it. and i want to start slowly and still have my other job.

Re: Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

I know I can be a bit touchy!! Why would'nt you think that you wouldn't be old enough to work in the city?? There are a few different bars in the city that will hire you even at 18 yrs old and they usually will train, however you'd need to be very thick skinned. Places Like Hogs and Hieffers or Red Rocks will train you if they like you. But it's a VERY loud and rowdy crowd, but you can make alot of money!!! The other down side is that you are in compition with the other girls you're working with. I used to work a the Village Idiot which is run the same. They have a '2/3's' rule. Which is if a girl doesn't ring up at least 2/3's of the highest register than she does not get an equal cut of the tips her share goes to the one who rung the highest. And if you get 2/3's to many time you get fired. So you sre in constant compition for customers. The up side is you will learn very quickly (YOU HAVE NO CHOICE) plusyou can make alot of money only working a few times a week, and if it's your scene you'll have alot of fun!! I loved working at those types of bars always made ton's of cash and had lot's of fun. ALSO FOR THE MOST PART YOU HAVE TO DRINK!!! People buy shots and you have to drink them. If you are up to it definetly give it a try you are better off calling and finding out when the owner/manager is there and then just walk in. How old are you.

Re: Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

I never went to any bartending school, didn't know anything...I went into a local bar, and said that I had experience, so they hired me.

If you think about it, most people order drinks by ingredient like, 'vodka and 7', or 'vodka cranberry', etc.

And, whenever I didn't know how to make a drink, I'd ask the customer or the other bartender.

It's sooooooo easy!

And the money is fantastic!

Kathy116 Posted:

Re: Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

I also agree with Andrea, that there is a HUGE difference between a so-so bartender and that other kind of bartender that is polished and just fantastic. However, you can make great money at local places like Houlihans, etc and not have to be all that polished., (ie. at least $250, at least that's what I would make out in Suffolk County).

I've written other posts about being a shot girl...and that was the best money ever...but it was tough to deal with the many dumb a$$es, at least I found that when bartending, there was a physical barrier between you and the obnoxious guys, yes there are bouncers, but you still have to deal with idiots.

Re: Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

yeah. it just sounds like something that i think i would do good at. people agree b/c i have a 'good personality' and can strike upa convo with anyone. whatever.
i forgot about people buying bartenders shots though!!!!! lol
the only reason i felt i was not 'old enough'... maybe just not 'ready' for it. im a pretty tiny girl and never felt like i was 'tough enough'. i think i am now. (to deal with azzholes and such)
oh, im 21.
well thanks everyone for all the info. we'll see how it goes.

Re: Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

Jessica-

you should try it out and see how you like it. Like the girl said above, it is more than making drinks and not everyone is cut out for it but how do you know unless you try.But many people do it for the $$$ and once you start its very hard to stop because, depending onthe place, you make great $$.
Like anything, you learn and get better- just like any job. When I first started, I sucked, I know i did, I was uncomfortable behind the bar, couldnt handle the amount of attention I got, the idiots and all. It was hard. But as time went on, I got better and I figured out a way to deal with everything else that comes along with it. I knew I had the personality,I liked meeting people, doing shots and making drinks.
And like the girl said above, you have to drink.. well i used to do that because it is out of respect if someone buys you a shot but you learn to fake it and and make clear vodka shots... took me 8 years and many a drunk nights to figure it out.

you seem to have a great personality and you have the look- you are beautiful. if you need any info fm me- ill see if i know anyone whose looking. The two bars I work at in Long Beach0 the owners also own bars in the city...
It all depends on the place and atmosphere. you get to learn the place, the people the drinks.

Re: Anyone Know Anything About Bartending??????

I always wanted to and still do want to be a bartender. I am really short and I always joke that I wont be able to reach the glasses that hang from the ceiling of the bar Most bars have the 'bible' My cousin told me. She said don't goto Bartending school. BUT then my uncle owns a bar with a partner. His partner told me if you want to work in a good bar and not a beermill(like his is) then you have to goto school. But he also told me that I can 'guest' bartend one night and if I make him a lot of money he will let me work there.
