Anyone know anything about law? Re: Websites and pictures???

I am starting a website and want to use some of my own proofs. Am I allowed to do this without the person who took the pictures permission?? The website will say at the bottom that pictures are by so and so.

The person who is putting up the website said that as long as they are MY pictures and I paid for them and it is not a photography website that it is ok but not sure if thats true.

I think it depends

I know that one photographer we saw said he would own our pictures- we woudl get our copies and thats that. anything else we needed to go through him

So we went with another business that gives us our proofs to own. We can make our own copies and such.

I would think that if your photographer is like the 1st...then i would check with them to see if you giving credit will be enough.

No, you can't use them just because they are your wedding pictures. I know, it seems stupid but it's copyright law.

The photographer owns the copyright to each picture unless a contract between the client and photographer states otherwise.

You can purchase the negatives (or digital files) from the photographer. You would then own the originals and therefore the copyrights; making sure that it is stated in the contract.

This may already be in your contract if you used a digital photographer that just hands over the files for you to print on your own. I assume places like 12th night have this kind of contract.

Yes, that's what I was going to say.. as long as you own your negatives.

If it's a private website for personal use, it's a very minimal risk, especially if you need a password to view.
