I just bought FH a birthday gift: dvd recorder with TiVo in the dvd recorder. SOmeone told me that if TiVo breaks, you have to start over again, even if you bought a lifetime of TiVo. I am wondering if maybe its not worth spending all this money on the dvd recorder/tivo thing.....I bought the 4-yr service plan at Best Buy for it, but if it breaks, what is the point, if i have to buy a new TiVo? I dont get it.....ANY info would be appreciated

Re: Anyone know anything about TiVo?
Your best bet would be to call Best Buy and ask them about this.
I know that if you have a lifetime Tivo... I think the only way to get the lifetime transferred if your unit breaks is if Tivo does the repair work themselves. But if you have a Best Buy repair plan... it probably has a different set of rules.
This is a question you have to ask Best Buy to get a definite answer.

Re: Anyone know anything about TiVo?
Basically if your recorder dies of unnatural causes (you drop it, you submerge it in water, etc.) you will have to reenroll for a lifetime program.
If there are issues caused by TiVo itself or the box malfunctions without external prompting, the warranty should cover it and you will be able to continue under the same lifetime plan.
So as long as it is safely on a shelf, it's unlikely you will have an issue.

the lifetime tivo subscription is not your lifetime, it's the lifetime of the tivo. i don't know about the service plans, you'll need to talk to best buy and/or tivo, but if tivo decides not to support your model of tivo anymore and you bought the lifetime service you're out of luck. your best bet is to buy the monthly tivo service b/c then you can upgrade and stuff easily later on.

Re: Anyone know anything about TiVo?
If you purchased a DVD recorder with Tivo, i believe the maker of the recorder is responsible. Tivo just provides the service so users can use the various trick play functions (pause live TV, rewind, FWD) and the ability to do season passes, etc.... Also, the lifetime service is only good on the specific recorder that it was purchased for. There are a few instances where they will transfer the lifetime service, ie, there is a defect with the recorder that you purchased.
I know a little about the Tivo service bc they are our client. I definitely agree that you should call Best Buy to find out what is covered under the service plan. If you have specific questions on the Tivo service you can post a question on TiVo Customer Forums and someone will answer your question.
