Anyone move from city to suburbs???

We live in the equivalent of Queens or Brooklyn right now. We're searching for a house/apartment to buy and I can't help but notice how much more we'd get for our money if we moved a little further out. But then there's part of me who doesn't want to be 'stuck' in the suburbs...

Anyone else experience this? Are you getting through it okay??? Why did you move to the suburbs in the first place?

We moved from Brooklyn to Orange County and now that I'm more used to the change of pace I'm much happier with my surroundings. Everything is cleaner, people are MUCH nicer and here no one can crowd my land. Hooray for privacy!!!

FI and I moved from Brooklyn Heights to an apt out here in LI. My FI would probably be better suited to answer this question than I am, because we moved to LI for me. As beautiful and close to everything as Brooklyn Heights was, city living wasn't for me(for me it was kind of like the saying 'a nice place to visit but I wouldnt want to live there'). FI on the other hand LOOOVED living in the city. I felt bad taking him out of it, but he has adjusted very well. For him as long as we can make it into the city a couple of weekends month for fun things (going out, plays dinners etc.) he is content. He loves the space and taking advantage of all of the 'nature' we have out here (I'm not kidding), he loves being able to run or ride his bike and not fearing that he will be run over in the streets. All and all we are both happier and our rent is cheaper.

DH lived in Queens and moved to Hoboken for me. We just bought a place in the Jersey burbs because we want to start a family. The commute is annoying, but could be worse.

If we had no desire for kids we would probably continue to live the more 'city-type' of life...but we are getting older and are financially forced to do the burb thing, plus it's a nice change of pace and space!

We moved from Queens to Putnam County. It used to be 20 minutes to midtown, now it's an hour and 20 minutes!

I have found similar things to Woozshle- nicer people, more space, more privacy, and the quiet is lovely.

We used to spend lots of time in Manhattan while we were living in Queens, and DH actually lived there when we first met. We both love Broadway and museums and restaurants and just walking around the city.

I miss it less than I thought- the pace here is slower but I feel more relaxed. We're kind of in the sticks but I love being closer to nature, as corny as that sounds. And there is a lot to explore here- parks, historical places, there's more of an arts scene than I expected, and outdoor stuff up the wazoo.

So in a nutshell, I am glad we ended up here. We got more house for our money, the schools are good and there is plenty to do- just different types of things from what we did when we were in Queens. The only thing I really miss is being able to walk to all the stores. There's nothing in walking distance any more.

We moved from Brooklyn to Suffolk Co. I am still adjusting.

I miss:

My friends, most of whom live in the city

The subway/cabs - no worries about drinking and driving

Also, I have heard many offensive racist comments here that make me sick. There seems to be more ignorance where I am now versus where I lived before.

Re: Anyone move from city to suburbs???

I lived in Queens my whole life and then 3 years ago I moved with my mom to Levittown. In Queens, I absolutely hated stopping for a light at every corner and having to park 5 blocks away because I couldn't find a spot when there was alternate side of the street parking. People had driveways 2 blocks away and would park in the street so strangers couldn't park on their block and their kids could play in the driveway! I hated that and all the traffic. I lived on a main street and had to listen to all the buses and motorcycles and people honking at the light. My neighbors played loud conga music till 4am. I moved out here and it was so much better. It's quiet, still a lot of traffic, but not as bad, I can park, the neighbors are so much better! Last year I moved out to Suffolk and things got even better and DH and I are looking to maybe go a little further east. It's cheaper the further east you go and less congested. The only thing I miss is not being able to hop on a 5min train ride to the city. We enver go to the city anymore because we don't wanna pay like $30 to the LIRR and we don't want to drive all the way in and drink. But we do different stuff out here that I didn't used to do when I lived in the city and there are lots of goodplaces to go out and we head to the Hamptons instead.

Me and DH moved from NYC to Queens and now to LI. I actually love the suburbs compared to city living. The only thing me and DH hate is the commute now into the city, but i think it is worth it because we have a lawn to water, a driveway to park our cars in, neighbors who have become dear friends of ours, and i find it just nice that when i pull into the driveway everyone who is our or passes you waves to say hello.

In the city i could never find anyone who wanted to do anything like that so i love the burbs.......

Good luck!

Re: Anyone move from city to suburbs???

I lived in Queens my entire life, then the city and we just moved to Bloomfield NJ because that was the closest we could afford that was still near the city and with a good neighborhood/school, etc...

I have to be honest it has been a very difficult adjustment for me. No offense to any NJ girls but I am a very proud New Yorker and no longer having the NY on my license really hurts! I have only been here 2 months and because we are still so deep in renovating the house we have not had many opportunities to enjoy it so I am sure that is not helping. But...I know it will get better and easier as I start to feel more comfortable.

It is too bad that we have to be so forced to compromise where we want to be when looking for a house. It really can put a strain on things. It is funny I look at it a lot like wedding planning. For me I found aspects of it to be very stressful even though people made me feel like it was supposed to be the happiest time of my life. In the end it it was... but leading up to the big day was a little rough. People now look at me like I should be jumping for joy because I have a house and I feel guilty that I miss my city life.

I realize it is like the wedding...I have to do things in my own time. There will always be pros and cons to city/suburban living. Having my husband say..'if you really hate it we can move back' has certainly helped my anxiety

My DH and I moved from NYC to Northern Westchester last year. After adjusting, I don't miss it at all. I go to the city when I get the urge and then I get to go home where its quiet and relaxing!

If we buy a house in the subabrs as opposed to Forest Hills or Queens it will be an adjustment for FH, he is orignally from Queens and is truly a 'city guy' but there are times when he likes the suburbs. We will have to find a happy medium or move completely out of state.
