Re: Anyone not doing a unity candle?
I am reading a bunch on the catholic ceremony and it is said to be discouraged in a catholic ceremony. They say it is performed in Christian/interfaith ceremonies or ceremonies outside of the church......

I haven't gotten one of those booklets yet, but I would ask your priest if he recommends it. It says that it varies by priest.
I am leaning towards no since it's more of a modern tradition

I don't know if there is a substitute but I've also seen that the individual candles should be lit from the Paschal candle and not be extinguished.. Also the unity candle should not be placed on the altar.

I am doing the unity candle and it will go after the blessing and exchange of the rings and before the prayer of the faithful.

I'm not I'm scared of fire lol. I've seen weddings where the couples combined wines and then drank from the same glass and I've seen sand as well. I'm considering those options. I'm thinking of the sand cuz I might want to involve my son too.

I just met with my priest and he said the unity candle is not part of the catholic mass but that they can incorporate it since it is a tred they see with a lot of couples. I think it comes after the rings?

Re: Anyone not doing a unity candle?
We're not. No sand, wine or anything else. We chose a simple ceremony from our officiant (because it was less expensive) and I didn't want a dusty candle in my house, or a piece of sand art. LOL. We are only breaking the glass, which she said she would do because it's a cultural thing.

it's used more frequently in protestant - or non denominational Faiths
I'm not catholic, I am doing one
my FSIL is agnostic (or atheist not sure) so she did a ring warming ceremony instead.
you get someone to walk around before the ceremony and let everyone touch the rings and bless it, pray for it, or just wish the couple luck thus 'warming the ring' and then a small explanation is read during the ceremony ( or put in the program- or both)
