Not sure yet. for those who aren't, what are you doing instead?

Nothing lol we are doing a full Catholic mass and IMHO the vows are enough 'unity' for us lol. I find the candle to just to be an added thing, something else to spend money on. Plus I don't feel like adding something else to an already long mass, that's just not fair to people lol.

Yes, Catholics are Christians but what I meant by Christian was Protestant (Lutheran, Baptist, etc) - The mass is different in both senses.

Sorry my question wasn't neccessarily directed at you, I've seen it on here a bunch of times and wanted to know...I'm not catholic and I just wondered. Thanks!

I'm not doing one, I don't think Jews do them...

Not doing any kind of extra ceremony, ie unity candle, sand, none of it.

What the priest means is that the unity candle (like the presentation of the flowers to Mary) is not a part of the official Rite of Marriage of the Church but a local or modern custom that is often incorporated. Depending on the pastor or diocese it's usually allowed but he's just saying its not an official part of the liturgy and therefore not required or encouraged or discouraged for that matter.

Actually, did you know that the FOB walking the Bride down the aisle is technically not part of the official Rite (as its written)? In the actual Rite, it starts at the front doors of the Church and the bride and groom walk up the aisle together. The FOB giving the Bride away, like the unity candle, is a custom, but one so frequently used that it's become the norm.

And to answer your question, no we're not doing one lol No big reason, we're just not.

Im doing it because we both like it and since fh is jewish and forced to marry in a catholic church he might as well have something for him to do

I am (I think) but I am using a plain ivory pillar and two plain tapers and purchased three holders from Jean M. At first I wanted a custom one but then I realized that it would just collect dust

We're not. No sand, wine or anything else. We chose a simple ceremony from our officiant (because it was less expensive) and I didn't want a dusty candle in my house, or a piece of sand art. LOL. We are only breaking the glass, which she said she would do because it's a cultural thing.

THIS exactly

FH and I have been discussing it since I am not sure that I want one sitting around.....our Deacon said sand is fine too, if we want to do that instead of a candle.

I am just not sure that it is something that I want to do?
