Anyone Not Register for Formal China?

Original post by jannshari

People have questioned why FH and I haven't registered for any formal china. We registered for casual china (which was between formal and everyday) and everyday dishes, but our casual china is somewhat contemporary and doesn't look like what you would expect 'china' to look like. Our feelings were that we are only 2 people right now, and even when we have kids, the likelihood of us really using formal china is slim. I know later on in life we'll probably have more reason to use it, but we assumed that we would just use what was passed down to us (and there will be stuff passed down). The other reason is because we didn't want to be stuck with half of our china pattern and have to shell out major money to complete it. And we're just not the 'formal' type.

Are we the only ones????

yeah, they still have it. Its Mikasa Palatial Platinum. I like it, but don't know if i want to stay with this pattern down the line.

I figure if you're unsure of it now, you're probably better off going with something that you really like now.

I was just discussing this topic today with my MOH's. I ditto all previously posted reasons for not wanting right away
I'd rather get stuff I really want! lol. We haven't picked a pattern yet - it seems overwhelming tho! Was it hard for you all?

We are probably just registering for kinda casual china (Villery & Boch havent decided on teh final set though)- and another less expensive casual china set - I am never going to use formal china - and even if I use it once a year - i can always use the nice casual set.

just discussed with FH... he wants to continue with our Pfaltzgraff Naturewood theme. we have our kitchen decorated with it (and accessories), but we use Corelle dishes. So we decided to go with the Naturewood for casual china to stay with our decor. i just wasn't sure he would want to stay with that pattern.

No fine china for us. We just couldn't see the need for it. We received very nice everyday dishes. When I go to someone's house who has beautiful china I do feel a little bad that I don't have any, but if people were going to get us gifts we'd rather have things that we knew we would use in our everyday life.

No fine china for us either. One b/c we really don't have the space for it and two b/c we're not really going to use it often.

I registered for Pfaltzgraff Naturewood for my everyday dishes. When my step-grandmother died, I got her china from Italy. It is really old and it is so pretty. It is a white plate with a redish-pinkish rose on the edge of the plate (it has been so long since I have seen them I forget what they exactly look like).

I know that we are definitely NOT registering for good china. We are going to need everthing from a microwave to silverware...all the basics and then some. I would rather good get everyday dishes and ALL the other necessities than good china that is going to sit in boxes! I figure when we get settled in a house, we'll invest in china. I think you need to do what's best for you...

Ditto that on needing everything.
We pretty much registered from a hand turning cheese grater to a TV and TV stand. We have kitchen towels, lamps, toaster oven & vacuum on our registery!!!

No fine china, no fine crystal. Target has some really classy dish sets. We got some with a platium band on the edges with a nice simple desgin.. something we'll use till they break or we find something else. Also picked up everyday colbalt blue dishes and some pale green set.

We didn't either. My mother said that for a present, she would give hers to us, because she has never used it!

We registered for Villeroy & Boch and Lindt & Stymeist - they are both 'casual' china - but cost pretty much the same as formal - I just didn't like any of the formal...we use the L & S for everyday

We just registered for casual. I have my grandmother's China and really love her pattern. I'll probably just replace pieces to hers as I want them.

Anyone else using family china and need lost peices check out www.replacements.com
