Anyone own a cape style home?

Anyone own a cape style home?

Looked at some houses this weekend... we really liked this one EXCEPT the way it was built is that one of the bedrooms has the slant and it makes that bedroom almost a helf room, there is not too much you can do with that room, so now it seems like the home is a 2 bedroom home instead of 3 bedrooms, any advice? Would you scratch it off your list because of this? thanks all!

At a later time...you could always dormer the cape. I wouldn't let it be a show-stopper...depends on the asking price and if you can get it for less...and if you love the rest of the house and neighborhood.

Yes, it has a full basement, unfinished but very clean - the house is 6 years old and in the neighborhood we like, it is just hard to make a decision when EVERYTHING is so expensive I feel like we are settleing a little BUT everything is higher out there then this one.

one of my needs are a basement so I would consider it

BUT if you are not 100% in LOVE with the home
I would keep looking

it the Most expensive thing you will invest in
the 1st are your children

make sure you love it

good luck

Re: Anyone own a cape style home?

I grew up in a three bedroom cape. My parents room was on the main floor and us kids were upstairs in two bedrooms. My parents dormered the rear, so each bedroom was square on one end and had the slanted ceiling on the other. The nice part was that the rooms were huge.

It's common to dormer capes...

What about the rest of the house? Do you love it? How about the neighborhood??

Good luck!!

I responded to your thread on NWR. Re-posting it here:

DH and I bought a cape and so far so good! We however, have an extension on our top floor so only one half of one of the rooms has the slant and it's not a big deal. We have a twin bed, a dresser and a desk in that room and there's still room left!

I'm used to cape's. I've lived in one with my family for 12 years.

I wouldnt' cross anything off if it's a house you really like and it's something in your price range.

Good luck!

Thank You for the replies, the neighborhood is good and price is normal (high to me) I guess but it is in great shape and only 5 years old I don’t think this was a dormer added to the house, it was just built that way - I really don’t know too much about Capes. We have no children and aren’t planning on that too soon (at least a year) so we don’t even have use for that 3rd room, I am just sooo confused! It is better than any starter home we could get it.

Re: Anyone own a cape style home?

the roof is just slanted on both sides? That's common in most capes - it's just that they haven't dormered at all on either side.

The most popular way to dormer is either adding the windows that pop out on the front or have the entire roof raised to get more room inside.

Any upstairs room is a lot smaller without the dormer but it's definitely do-able down the road.

We own a cape and the previous owners put a dormer on upstairs. This is my first experience with a cape and I do like it. The undormed side has a lot of nice storage and our huge closet!

I own a 3 bdrm cape that has slanted walls in the 2 rooms upstairs but the previous owners put in the dormer windows in front that look like dog houses.

Re: Anyone own a cape style home?

capes are 4 bedroom houses... 2 bedrooms on the first floor, two on the second.. although alot of people make the ones on the first floor into a den room..

i wouldnt rule it out, you could always dormer(raise the roof on the 2 sides) and it would be just like a colonial(without the attic that is)...
then when the house is dormered you could split one room into 2 if you like...

I am in the process of buying a cape. And I feel like it has alot of potential. EVentually, we can always dormer it if we want more room upstairs.
