What a beautiful story, Marcela. You and your mom are really terrific to provide such a loving home for those poor puppies ... it is no easy feat to rescue a dog, and you proved that it CAN be done, with a love of love and patience.
Thanks Felicia.

Re: Anyone rescue a dog? if so, from where?
Aw, it's so nice when owners find their pets.
I am looking at dogs that need to get adopted on rescue sites now. Does anyone else get sad when they see pictures of the dogs? I feel so bad for them because most of them had stupid jerks for owners who abandoned them or did who knows what to them.

It can bring me to tears!!
We actually adopted Max because we always look on the Little Shelter's website and always say 'oh let's go get this one or that one'.
Well ... one day we did!!! Poor hungry boy he was!!!

Yes, it breaks my heart too much too look at the adoption rescue site, b/c I know right now I can't have a dog where we live , and my instinct would be to run down there and get a pair of them!
What really makes me SADDER is when people spend MUCHO $$$ for some 'purebreed' and ignore all the dogs and cats that are desperate for a good home, who will only be put to sleep if they don't find one.
OK - I made myself sad now . Sorry to bring the topic down
ETA: Just to clarify: I certainly am not putting anyone down who wants a purebreed, or has one .. they are deserving of homes, too! Its just that so many people overlook the shelters or rescue sites, when they can find some amazing & beautiful animals there as well.

That's what makes me so sad. My FH wants a purebred mastiff, and you can't really find them in shelters, and we would have to get them from a breeder. This makes me feel so horrible. But I'm looking at AKC website, and they have rescue groups for them. I don't know if FH wants to raise him as a puppy, so if not, we can get one from there.
I couldn't believe I looked at breeder websites, and they just ship them to you. That's horrible! I was happy with one that said they screen the people who want a dog. It's like, how can you just give a dog to any old person who comes along?

Re: Anyone rescue a dog? if so, from where?
When my brother was a cop he was working highway patrol on New Years Eve. He was on the road and saw a dog basically frozen in fear in the middle of the road. He swung back around and picked the dog up. She had welts on her from being beaten. He took her to the vet and brought her home (he was engaged to be married at the time about 8 month later and told my parents he would take the dog with him). Well of coarse we all fell in love with her, and when my brogher got married me and my Mom would not let him take our dog away.
We named her Happy (for Happy New Year).
My MOH's husband is a fireman. Someone walked the the house one day with a dog on a phone cord as a leash. He told him that his friend owned the dog, but that he treated the dog badle and could the firehouse take him. Kevin took the dog home and they still have him, he's great. His name is Stinky

Thanks. We are big animal lovers!! My dream would be to have a huge amount of property so that i could as many animals as I wanted
You and me both!!! Every time I see a stray I beg DH to let me take it home.... He is deathly allergic to dogs, which is why we have cats, but I swear one day I will have my too!!!
LOL! I do that to FH all the time. And the times that we've tried, the dogs won't come near us. They jet the other way. I know how it is to lose a dog, so if I can do anything for someone else to be reunited with their pet, I would do it.
I have another story, which has a great ending. This was about 6 yrs ago. My ex boyfriend and I went skiing upstate. When we were coming back to the hotel from dinner, we see this medium size puppy roaming the street We almost hit it. It was a windy road and there were no lights. So i told him to stop and when I opened the door, the dog jumped right into his car and started jumping around and licking us. I felt horrible and told him that under no circumstances would i leave this dog in the freezing weather in the middle of the street. Although we were afraid to get kicked out of the hotel, we took him back to the room. He was quiet at first, but then he started barking like crazy. I thought for sure we were going to get kicked out. The next morning we didn't know what to do with the dog, so we felt we had to ask the owners of the hotel. When we did they were SUPER nice about it and suggested that we call the dog pound. When I did it happened that someone had put in a missing dog report for the puppy we had picked up. The woman came and picked up her pup that same day and was so grateful. The girl's boyfriend had let the dog out to do it's business. Apparently it is common up there to just let your dog roam the streets to do its business. I told the woman that I was sorry that I had no idea that it was like that there b/c in the city we don't do that. She said not to worry since she had specifically told her boyfriend to not allow the dog to go out by itself and her boyfriend did anyway.
WHAT A GREAT STORY!!!!! You are just like me....When we were on our honeymoon in Italy, we were out hiking one day and came across the CUTEST kitten and I stopped and pet her for a bit and then we kept going....well low and behold she followed us.... She followed us up the ENTIRE mountain and back down and I was literally crying because I wanted to take her back to the hotel.... When we got near the bottom of the trail another cat popped out - She looked just like the kitten only bigger and when the kitten saw her she ran over to her and they ran off together..... AW!!! It was so cute and made me feel so much better....
Here is a pic:
I'm holding the little one, and the big one is behind my leg....aw...they were so cute!

Yes it breaks my heart. I don't like going to the rescue places b/c I always leave there sooo sad. I wish I could bring everyone one of them home with me. But unfortunately I can't

I 100% agree. I know people want certain type of dogs and some have special needs (allergies) but I think it's great to adopt a dog or cat from a shelter like Bide-A-Wee. My family presently has 2 dogs from there now.
Sage- if you husband is allergic, there is a type of dog that he might be able to deal with. It's a maltese - my DH's uncle is SO allergic but they have one and it doesn't bother him. I don't think they have much dander, if any at all. It's so cute and little too! Like I said, for a reason like allergies, if you have to go to a breeder, I think that's fine.

My dad rescued my childhood dog!
He was on a call for domestic abuse in Harlem and when he got there the house was filled with animals! Every kind you could think of and in the back inside a pillow case was a tiny white puppy who could hardly even walk yet.
They had been abusing her!!!!! She was so little and soooo sweet he swept her right up and brought her home to us. We found out later on that they had tried to drown her and so for the rest of her life she was petrified of water! So sad...I loved that dog..my little pupcake...thank god my dad found her!

we rescued our family dog from the Brookhaven Town pound...his time was just about up!! We've also taken in numerous abandoned cats and my very first dog was abandoned in the park across the street where I grew up...my dad fed him thta night and said if he was back in the morning, we'd keep him!

There is a place in Port Jeff Station that is a rescue shelter. I was talking to a client the other day and she had told me that is where she got her dog. The original owner was old and had died. It wasn't a mutt either although I forgot what she had. But she said it is the best behaved dog. I will see if I can find the info on Monday.
