Confused .... did you lose a dog? Or are you looking to rescue a dog?

No way. I hate dogs. I would be too nervous to get near one to save them, but I would call for help very loudly

Haven't rescued a dog, but I did rescue both my kitty's from our local pound....
IMO, I would rather just go to the local pound and save a life that would otherwise be spent in cage and ultimately put down if no one else rescued them....

Are you thinking of doing this Marcella?

Re: Anyone rescue a dog? if so, from where?

My mom rescued 3 dogs.

Some backgound info...Two of my dogs ran away and we went insane looking for them but never found them . So every week my mother would go to ASPCA and all of the other rescue places to see if anyone had picked up our dogs.
First was Rusty (a golden retriever that his previous owner paid $800 for and had him tied up all day in an apartment in the city and was taking him to the ASPCA b/c he was just too big and couldn't take him anymore ). My mom knew that he probably wouldn't get adopted since he was big already, so she took him right from the woman on the street and brought him home. He was insane when she brought him home. But he is so smart and learned so many things, incl. not to to cross the street until my mom tells him to. The woman who bought him was just had no patience and should not have gotten a dog, period )

The two other dogs were rescued from the street literally. Once my mom brought Rusty home she would take him for long walks. On one of the walks she found 2 dogs. One we named Benji (a terrier mix) and one we named Dukie (a doberman). My mom picked up Benji and Dukie just followed her home. They were inseparable. After she brought them home we put signs everywhere w/their pics, but no one ever claimed them. We think they were abused b/c at first Benji would crouch down whenever you tried to pet him and Dukie to this day does not like young men. After 3 yrs of dating FH, he is just recently allowing FH to pet him.
We currently have Dukie and Rusty. Benji passed on 2 yrs ago He was my baby, it still breaks my heart

Re: Anyone rescue a dog? if so, from where?

My FH found a dog one time at 2am while he was driving home one night on a block that's a few blocks away. The dog was really dirty, and he tried giving him a bath. It was a really nice dog though, very friendly.

The next day we decided to go to a vet or shelter and see if anyone reported the dog missing. My FH decided to stop at the block he found him at to see if anyone knew the dog. As soon as we went by the block, we saw a woman and asked, and it belonged to her next-door neighbor. When we brought it to the woman, she didn't even act that happy. I wish we would have kept the dog because I really think the woman just left it outside so it would run away because it was sitting in the street outside the house. Their house was filthy, and the dog was probably really dirty because they never cleaned him.

Too bad it's hard to find an apartment that allows you to have more than one dog, if any dog at all. We want to get an English Mastiff, but I don't know if we'll be able to.

If you are looking for a particular breed of dog to rescue, go to the American Kennel Club's website, click on 'Clubs', then click on 'Breed Rescue Groups'.

Otherwise, there's always North Shore, Bide-A-Wee, Little Shelter all on Long Island.

Good luck!!

What a beautiful story, Marcela. You and your mom are really terrific to provide such a loving home for those poor puppies ... it is no easy feat to rescue a dog, and you proved that it CAN be done, with a love of love and patience.

I WISH we could have dogs .. (only have Mia our cat right now) but our apartment complex won't allow us to. Besides I'd feel badly keeping a dog inside all day anyhow .. But the minute we get a house, its going to be Doggie Central!! (and kitty central, too !!)

LOL!!! I thought you meant have I ever been walking down the street and saw a dog stuck in a fence or something and helped to free him. Duh.

Sorry I mentioned my aversion for dogs on a thread that was about taking them home and loving them, and not getting them down from trees or something.

Re: Anyone rescue a dog? if so, from where?

I'm going to look at that AKC website to see if they have mastiffs to rescue.

I thought it would be cruel to have two dogs in an apartment, especially a mastiff since they're so big, but then I read that they are okay with living in an apartment because they're basically inactive when they're inside anyway and are fine as long as they get exercise. I made sure to do research on this.

I can't wait to get a house either. Who knows if I'll have babies, but I definitely want to get some more dogs, especially from a shelter since I feel bad that our dog now didn't come from one. I want to rescue some from there.

Sage (and anyone who is allergic to dogs) - there was an article on CNN recently about a new mixed breed of dog that people with allergies can have. I forget what it is called - not a yorkie poo but something like that....

LOL! I do that to FH all the time. And the times that we've tried, the dogs won't come near us. They jet the other way. I know how it is to lose a dog, so if I can do anything for someone else to be reunited with their pet, I would do it.

I have another story, which has a great ending. This was about 6 yrs ago. My ex boyfriend and I went skiing upstate. When we were coming back to the hotel from dinner, we see this medium size puppy roaming the street We almost hit it. It was a windy road and there were no lights. So i told him to stop and when I opened the door, the dog jumped right into his car and started jumping around and licking us. I felt horrible and told him that under no circumstances would i leave this dog in the freezing weather in the middle of the street. Although we were afraid to get kicked out of the hotel, we took him back to the room. He was quiet at first, but then he started barking like crazy. I thought for sure we were going to get kicked out. The next morning we didn't know what to do with the dog, so we felt we had to ask the owners of the hotel. When we did they were SUPER nice about it and suggested that we call the dog pound. When I did it happened that someone had put in a missing dog report for the puppy we had picked up. The woman came and picked up her pup that same day and was so grateful. The girl's boyfriend had let the dog out to do it's business. Apparently it is common up there to just let your dog roam the streets to do its business. I told the woman that I was sorry that I had no idea that it was like that there b/c in the city we don't do that. She said not to worry since she had specifically told her boyfriend to not allow the dog to go out by itself and her boyfriend did anyway.
