Anyone Scared Of Having Kids? $$$ POLL

Anyone Scared Of Having Kids? $$$ POLL

Ok, so DH and I have only been married about 2 weeks but we're not ready to have kids yet.

I don't mind as DH and I are our early 30s, have our own home and are financially capable, but after reading about how much it cost to have kids
we had to do a doubletake!

Total amount needed to raise a child (if they attend 4 yr. public college): $634,456

Total amount needed to raise a child (if they attend 4 yr private college): $846,352

baby cost calculator

?!?!

you just can't look it at that way. if we all did that, no one would have kids.

I agree!

Plus, its not like you have to pay this upfront!

And, isn't it soooooo worth it?

Ok so it isn't just about money...

DH and I have 10 nieces and nephews between us so we know all the trials and tribulations of being a parent.

The career ceiling for mothers who can't put 110% into work, the daycare drama, being servant to your child, etc.!

But the cost brings another dimension to it! :(

Ehh, I'm not too worried about it-- if my parents did it (and they did it quite well) then we'll do it. Vinny had a freaking nanny and housekeeper growing up lol he was living the high life! But all we can do is work hard, not live above our means and do the best we can.

those are scary numbers, but if you own a home and have some extra money to put away at the end of every month you can do it. think of it this way, once you have kids - you stop going out - so you'll be saving money!

hmm, well if you are concerned-- maybe you should consider not having them... a lot of people don't have kids. then i see a lot of people who obviously didn't want kids and had them anyway-- maybe they felt compelled, b/c of society, to have them-- but it's quite clear that they don't want them and then you just create a miserable life for the child you brought into this world and weren't so thrilled about doing it...

i know a lot of people who chose not to have them b/c of a lot of reasons and that's OK too-- it doesn't make you a bad person. i respect people more who don't have them b/c they realize it is not for them than people who push on and have them b/c they feel 'it's the right thing to do'. it's really a personal decision

Those numbers mean nothing without a breakdown of what they take into consideration.

for how long? is that until your child reaches 22?

the 600k figure breaks down to 28k a year....and obviously college tuition years are more and baby years with NO school are less than those...and certain years where you won't need childcare are even lower. these things scare you....but people who make 20k raise kids alone just fine. you KNOW they never spend 600k on their kids in 22 years.

DON'T SWEAT THIS.

I can't even think of having kids right now...the financial stats are scary, but I'm just scared of screwing them up...I don't want to be responsible for sending anyone to therapy...
