I am and I know one of my friends is not. I was just wondering what all of you were doing.

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
I have been grappling with this issue since I got engaged. I am pretty traditional, so I want to take my FH's name when we get married. but at the same time, I would like to keep or hyphenate our last names for professional use. The idea of changing my name is hard though...you live your whole life identifying yourself one way, and even though it doesn't change the person you are, it still takes a lot of getting used to.

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
I am DEFINATELY changing my name.
RIght now I have every uncommon consonant in my last name...NO ONE can pronounce it, it's like 10 letters!
I'll be going to a beautiful short last name, and it's type of flower!

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
I'm going to hyphenate, but will not change my name for professional purposes. I also cant seem to part with my last name; it feels like I am giving up part of my identity. Maybe I'll just ask my FH to take my name!

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
I HAVE BEEN DEBATING FOR A WHILE. MY FH REALLY WANTSM E TO CHANGE IT, BUT MY FATHER PASSED AWAY AND THERE ARE NO MORE MEN TO CARRY ON THE NAME SO I FEEL LIKE I WANT TO KEEP IT. BUT ALSO I DONT WANT OUR CHILDREN TO HAVE DIFFERENT LAST NAMES. AND IT SOUNDS REALLY BAD HYPHENATED. IM AT A TOTAL LOSS. I WAS VERY CLOSE WITH MY FATHER AND I FEEL LIKE T HAT PART OF ME WILL BE GONE ALONG WITH HIS NAME

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
I'm adding his name to mine (with no hyphen). I will use my maiden name for business but I will use his name for everything else.

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
I feel the same way. I don't want to give up my identity. This is who I am, it would be so weird to change my name. FI is very distressed about this, he really wants me to change it, but I'm pretty torn. I'm going to see how I feel after we are married.

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
From a been-there-done-that bride: I hypenated my name but professionally it is still my maiden name. It has worked out fine. In fact, sometimes I will use husband's last name only on subscription type stuff so I know if anyone calls for Michele Husband'sLasts Name Only it is someone I do not know.
If your husband is distressed ask him WHY? Would he change his name to yours to make you happy? Most will say No, so how can he ask you for something he is not willing to do?
After marriage it is MUCH harder to change your name. You can hypenated it legally and use his name only socially if you want. That might be a good comprimise.

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
Since my future in-laws are dictating every part of the wedding, I was considering not changing it just to preserve some part of myself. I have a tough name to hyphenate unfortunately. I really like the idea of using both without the hyphen but I feel like a lot of people will only use the last name anyway so it defeats the purpose.
I didn't realize it was tougher to change your name after marriage. May I ask why?

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
Wow, I am glad to hear that I am not the only one thinking about this. I don't really want to change mine either. I love my last name and actually use part of it as a nickname for myself. I don't want to hurt my FH's feeling and he is not happy about it, but I kind of want to keep a part of me. I still don't know what I'm gonna do, but I'm glad for all of your input.

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
i am having such a dilemma over this. either keep my name or make my name my middle name and take fh's last name. there are so many reasons for both. thank goodness i have 10 more months to decide!

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
I'll be honest, although I love my FH and taking his name is an honor, I was very sad about losing my name.. I even cried the day that I went to get hte license, but now that it's subsided, I am excited about my new name!

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
I would like to add his last name to my name (no hypen). Mary Smith to Mary Smith Jones. I'd also like to use my maiden name for work purposes and his last name for personal purposes. However, since I will be an attorney by the time we get married, I'm not really sure how it will work. I still haven't found out I really don't know if I can just drop my last name. My Dad only has 2 daughters, no sons, so his name will die with us. Fh really wants me to take his name but doesn't mind if I keep my last name and add his to mine.

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
Does anybody know what the rules are about hyphenating? Where to go for the official information? Every person I talk to seems to have a different story. I thought if I hyphenated, I could still use my maiden name professionally, but the marriage license people said that wasn't true. And the back won't accept my paychecks without the hypenated name. This whole thing is getting super complicated!
If you can't guess already, I did hyphenate in the end b/c it seemed really important to him that I have his last name and I want to have the same last name as my kids, but at the same time want to keep my own... But I just want to know what to do now? The only place where my name is changed at the moment is my marriage license.

Re: Anyone undecided about changing their name?
I am going to hyphen my name just so I can still have it. I will go by my married name mostly, but I LOVE my last name and need to hold on a bit. I wanted my FH to take my name, but he laughed at me
