I am addicted to this show too!! I can not wait for Sunday night - Rocco is so gorgeous I think, although his personality is a bit shifty. Too bad it is only a 6 episode series - 3 more to go!

I LOVE this show! Rocco is so hot, though I was not very impressesd with him on last weeks episode. I thought he was being pretty crappy, but then again, who knows what got cut during editing.

I didn't realize the series was only 6 episodes long!! Thats just not enough!

Hey, what happened to Gideon (I think thats his name)? How'd he get hurt?

---Edited because I have no idea how to spell properly!

Re: Anyone watch 'The Restaurant'?

Gideon fell in the kitchen and broke his arm.

After last nights episode, I realized a couple of things..

Either they are editing this show to make Rocco look like a huge jerk, or he really is a huge jerk. I can't figure it out.

And..the blatent advertising on the show is irritating already. The Coors Light and Amex plugs were enough, now they had to throw a story line about a Vespa in?? I highly doubt that scooter was Rocco's purchase that he just gave to a bartender. That was product placement at it's best.

I have to admit I don't care for the show - first off, it does nothing but irritate and stress me out, and it's too late in the evening for that!

It just annoys me that everyone's running around all night, and Rocco's flirting and chatting with random customers all night.

Plus, I don't find the show too interesting - when it's not so insane it's kinda boring. <-that's my yawn!

I think Rocco is an idiot and I can't really understand why people keep going there when all they do is trash the place on TV...

He's a cutie, but I feel bad for the woman who marrys him...he's one HUGE momma's boy!

Re: Anyone watch 'The Restaurant'?

it's about time he got his rear end in the kitchen!!
That was crap that he gave the scooter thing to that girl to keep her on. Of course everyone else was going to find out and be p/o'd about it!

I've been watching it too. It's a pretty good show. Very interesting. I think Rocco is very cute, but I am not sure about his personality yet..

Fh said he read an article in the New Yorker (I think) that the whole show is fake and all the waiters/waitresses are actors.

And does anyone understand why a 'nice' restaurant like that would serve appetizers in those red and white box things ?

Re: Anyone watch 'The Restaurant'?

There are a lot of things about this show that made me turn it off half way through Sunday night. The main thing being the constant 'set ups'. Oh gee, for some reason they just couldn't pay the staff so Rocco had to go into his accounting person and TELL her to 'ok just go on Amex Open and get them paid easily!'. He might as well have been wearing an Amex sweatshirt, carrying a sign that said 'Use Amex' and paying for something using an Amex.

And, everytime something happens to one of the 'waiters' they just so happen to have a camera crew in their apartment on the phone with someone at the restaurant.

It's all a bunch 'o crap.

‘Restaurant’ good TV, bad business

Sponsorships interfere with realistic start up experience for viewers
Chef Rocco DiSpirito poses at his New York restaurant Rocco's. The reality TV show 'The Restaurant' captures all the drama with Rocco's restaurant opening, but fails to show a true business experience.

BUSINESSWEEK ONLINE

Aug. 20 — Major corporations lust after the small-business market, and for good reason. Depending on which statistics you believe, there are anywhere from 12 million to 25 million small businesses in the U.S., and they all need retirement accounts, credit cards, accounting services, stationery, and on and on.

UNFORTUNATELY FOR corporations, trying to corral small business owners is a bit like trying to herd cats. Business owners are an independent breed, and tend not to be easy to generalize about or to reach via television or advertising. So corporations try all kinds of alternative approaches, like setting up special Web sites and sponsoring Entrepreneur of the Year awards or business-plan contests.

Most recently, three major corporations cooperated on a new tack — producing a television show, “The Restaurant” (on NBC, Sundays, 10 p.m. in the East). Billed as “the ultimate reality show,” “The Restaurant” is a six-part series (ending Aug. 24) that has taken viewers behind the scenes for the launch of chef Rocco DiSpirito’s restaurant, Rocco’s, in Lower Manhattan. (MSNBC is a Microsoft-NBC joint venture.)

TOO MANY COOKS

Conceptually such a show makes a lot of sense because it’s very difficult for the many individuals considering starting a restaurant to truly appreciate the difficulties, and television is a wonderful medium for communicating key challenges. If people truly understood how difficult it is to launch a business, there would probably be fewer failures because of poor idea assessment.
So how does the show come off? Unfortunately, like too much of television, it provides a skewed view of life — and the fact that you have three major corporations calling the shots is a major reason.
On the positive side, it is excellent entertainment and drama — the chaos of opening night, the wait for a local newspaper’s review (and its complaint about food being “piping cold”), the decision about whether to fire an eager young worker. In demonstrating the endless frustrations that go with opening a restaurant, the show is an interesting education. Where it does best is in showing the difficulties associated with hiring, training, and supervising the kitchen staff and waiters.

FINGERS IN THE SOUP

Unfortunately, “The Restaurant” has a credibility problem. It is sponsored by American Express, Coors, and Mitsubishi. They don’t just advertise before and during the show, but insert themselves into the action. Viewers are treated to shots of diners at Rocco’s using their American Express cards to charge meals, of bartenders serving up glasses of Coors, and of Rocco driving around in a brand new Mitsubishi SUV.
What’s wrong with a little promo? The problem is that the promos interfere with key educational matters associated with starting and running a business. The role of American Express prevents viewers from gaining any insight into the dilemma that confronts restaurants and other retailers about whether to accept American Express, which charges higher merchant fees than Visa and Master Charge.
The presence of Coors hides from viewers the dilemmas associated with selecting and dealing with vendors. Viewers get no insight into the often tense negotiations and deal-making that goes on between manufacturers, distributors, and retailers, and determines the range of selection available in many restaurants and stores. Finally, the sight of Rocco, the embattled startup entrepreneur, driving around in a brand new SUV is a bit disconcerting. Why is he spending so much money on a new car at a time when he’s presumably investing everything he has into the restaurant? But wait, he probably didn’t have to buy the SUV, did he?

RUSH ORDER
These conflicts of interest aren’t just isolated matters. I found myself wondering why Rocco felt so compelled to rush into opening his restaurant weeks before he was really ready. The premature opening helped create the chaos that made for much of the show’s entertainment. And according to Rocco’s American Express-sponsored Web site, it has helped make daily life and business at the restaurant a real, hectic handful.

If Rocco had his druthers, my bet is that he likely would have waited until proper preparations were completed before opening his doors. After all, as an experienced chef, he must have known that poor reviews generated by a rushed opening could prove fatal. But viewers are left to surmise that he likely opened early to accommodate television producers. At the end, the heavy-handed corporate involvement seems as much a missed opportunity to educate as it is engaging entertainment. I suspect the three corporate sponsors haven’t scored as many points as they might have with small-business owners.

Re: Anyone watch 'The Restaurant'?

This show is a total farce - this guy Rocco already owns one of the TOP 10 restaurants in NYC (in the top 10 for the past SIX years). In the world of chefs, he is larger than Emeril.

He was voted one of People's 25 Hottest last year and was given a show...what I don't get, is why THIS is his dream when he already owns one of the TOP restaurants in NYC?!

Bah Humbug!

I watch the show and I do restaurant audits with a friend. We actually did an audit of the service at Rocco's on Tuesday. I saw a few waiters there who were on the show.

Most of the things on the show were true. The service was terrible, the food took a long time, I was not overly impressed by the food.

Rocco came to our table and asked how things were going and we told him the truth. He then went into the kitchen and we had our food soon after.

I saw it once and I agree with Teri - there's too much going on at 10:00on a Sunday night

I did notice the Amex commercials - after 20 minutes I was thinking 'OK I GOT IT - USE AMERICAN EXPRESS'

i'm dissapointed with the outcome of the show. the first week I absolutely loved it, but as the series went on, I got more and more aggrivated. I will watch tonight to see the finale, but I'm not going to miss it too much.
