Anyone who uses Mobil Speed Pass: MUST READ
Last month DH noticed some activity on our bank statements. Weekly charges to Mobil/Exxon in Great Neck/Roslyn/Douglaston which is about 40 minutes from where we are. We knew they weren't our charges because
1. we use the local Mobil
2. all the charges were even amounts $20, $42, $8 and Jens never rounds up to the even dollar when he fills the car.
So he goes to the Mobil website and it says that if there's unusual activity to contact the bank. So he does and we have to sign all sorts of papers etc., We go through the bank statements and see these charges going as far back as November for about $500 total!
The strange thing is we HAVE our speedpass so we're thinking that maybe they sent another one out to someone and it's linked to our account by accident or whatever.
Anyway, we get the statment this month and AGAIN there are 2 charges for Mobil in Roslyn. He calls the bank and they tell ask why he didn't cancel the speed pass, and he says it's because Mobil says to take it up with the bank (Chase in our case) and Chase says that they can't do anything because it's not considered fraud. HOW it's not considered fraud when someone else is obviously using a Speedpass without your permissions is questionable, but anyway I tell him he has to take it up with Mobil now because there's no way we're paying $600 for charges that we didn't make.
So now we call Mobil and explain the situation. How we went to Chase (as per the Mobil instructions on the website) but Chase has since informed us that they can't help us. The Mobil guy asks
Did you lose your Speedpass?
No-I have it right here
Have you ever VALET PARKED YOUR CAR??
The guy has DH read off the serial number on the Speedpass and sure enough, IT'S NOTTHE SPEEDPASS THAT WAS ISSUED TO HIM.
Apparently it's an ongoing scam.
They (meaning the scammer/valet guy) has a dead speed pass and when he takes a car, he'll put the dead one on the keychain and take your pass.
So DH asked if there's anyway then that we can just trrace it back to the last pass, but we're told that it may not be the first switch and the dead one we were given could very well be one that someone else cancelled when they realized what was going on...and now that this one is dead, the guy will just wait for a new pass and transfer our dead one in exchange for how the one that works.
HOW SNEAKY AND CLEVER IS THAT!!??
AND after looking at our records this has been going on since SEPTEMBER!!
The guy asked DH how come he didn't realize that the pass he had wasn't working...but DH told him that he just assumed it was the machine and not the pass. At least they're refunding all the charges.
