I was just wondering...crazy question. When u start as a teacher or speech language pathologist, do your benefits and maternity leave kick in right away or u have to wait like a yr?

Re: anyone work in a school?
Benefits start right away. Not sure about maternity leave...most people recommend that you stay there for a couple of years before getting pregnant to be on the 'safe' side.

Re: anyone work in a school?
benefits start asof your first day...maternity i would assume so too since it is the law...however your boss/principal might not like that they have just hired you and then you need time off...if you neededing it is a possibility be upfront about it

Re: anyone work in a school?
you really should wait until you are tenured to have children and take a leave.
I know in my district you get a 6-week paid leave (30 days) only if you have those 30 days in your sick bank otherwise you get no pay. So max days paid you can get are 30 but only if you have those days accumulated. A position in the district will be held for you for up to two years if you decide to take a leave but again, that I believe is only if you are tenured.
We had a girl in my dept go out on maternity and they asked her not to come back.

mine kicked in right away. i am also part of a fantastic union. we don't get maternity leave though- you can take up to 3 mos unpaid with benefits... you can also bank up to i think 200 sick days that you can use for when you get pregnant (you earn 10 days per year where i am)

Benefits will start as per whatever contract you sign. However, consider getting tenure first.
