Re: Anyone work in HR?
my sister is in HR. Her degree from college was in poly sci with a psych minor. She got a job in a publishing house in the HR dept as an assistant when she first graduated, stayed there for a few years to get experience. Then she made the jump into an investment bank. Worked there for a few years, got them to pay for her to get her masters degree (in industrial and labor relations through Cornell University). Has since jumped ship to 2 other banks. Now is a director of HR (I forget what division).

Re: Anyone work in HR?
I currently work in HR, handling all the employee benefits. Basically, I started through an internship while I was in college, and was offered a part time position while I finished college. I knew it was very difficult to get into HR without the experience. So, I decided to take the job while I finish school. That was years ago, and I have been in the field for 10 years now (wow - I cant believe that long already).
The best thing is to just to somehow get your foot in the door. Without experience its very difficult. So, that would mean taking an entry level position to gain the experience. Even finding an admin position or temp position, and then work yourself up or gain enough experience and look for another HR position at a different company. The hard part is getting in the door. There is Human Resource Management Society (SHRM) - LI Chapter which is a great networking tool. I sugesst having your friend start by joining and meeting all other HR professionals and start networking. Also, have her look for entry level positions, right now it may be a little tough with the economy. Also, she could always take certificate programs, which are some basic HR related courses to have something related.
Hope this helps!

I work in HR and I started by taking a position as an assistant. As a previous poster said, you really just need to get your foot in any way possible. Start as an assistant and work your way up. It's a great field and usually is pretty steady. I have my BBA and am going to Law School to practice Labor Law. Good Luck to your friend.

I work in HR and I got my degree in business administration with a concentration in HR Management. I did an internship the summer before I graduated and now I work as an HR Generalist.

ITA....started as an HR Associate...assisting the Head of HR...but sitting in on meetings, learning the employment laws, composing offer and severance letters. Also assisted with the recruiting process....filed resumes... you pick things up along the way and there is quick movement if you work in a good company. If you major in Business Management, Sociology and HR management, you can start as an Associate (a step above Asst I guess)... and work you way to Generalist or Recruiter.... you can get a better idea of what each area of HR offers and which you prefer doing. Advice...learn about the employment laws, benefit entitlements and recruiting trends. Always helps to be familair with terminology before stepping into it.

Re: Anyone work in HR?
The best way to get into HR is to have experience in HR which sounds silly but it's true. Most people either fall into it or have degrees in organizational psychology or just in psychology. Most people in HR on Long Island either go for their masters in human resource management or at least their certificates so it's a little competitive.
