Anyone's FH want a platinum band?

FMIL (who I love) has gotten a little too involved in her son's wedidng band choice. So anyway, now he's convinced he needs a platinum band, instead of white gold. I never really hear of men getting platinum...anyone's FH want this, too?

P.S. This would make his wedding band more expensive than mine!

Platnium bands for men are not common because , platnium is softer than gold and dents easier, I wouldnt recomend him to get platnium

FHs band is white gold with lots of bling.. our jeweler said that he shouldnt get the platinum because the color fades if you dont clean it regularly (which he wont), its too expensive and that white gold was sturdier and more reliable a metal than platinum (cause it can get more damanged easily).. dont know if that true, but thats what she told us and she would have been making more money if we bought the platinum so I dont see why she would lie, plus we have been going to her for years

My FH was sooo concerned about money he went out and bought himself a $200 ring from Whitehalls when they were closing. I actually wish he would have waited because the quality on this ring is horrible, and I wanted him to have something nicer. So definitely no platinum for him.

I can see how you don't want his ring to cost more than yours. I felt the same way.

My FH husband wants a platinum band because my ring is platnium he thinks he should have it to. I have explained to him a MILLION times that platinum is soft and his ring will scratch and dent really easily and it's going to be a mess and that he should just get white gold. Not to mention the cost for absolutely no good reason!

I know it's just because it's more expensive he thinks it's 'better' but I keep trying to convince him that it is much more practical to get white gold. I think I'm starting to get through, but who knows when we actually go to buy the band.

Re: Anyone's FH want a platinum band?

I googled wite golr vs. platinum.....:

White Gold

White gold rings, much like their yellow gold counterparts, are actually alloys with varying degrees of purity. Yellow gold rings were usually forged with metals like copper to give them their yellowish shine, while white gold is made by mixing gold with silver or palladium. Both are rated in karats depending on the amount of gold to other metal ratio. For example, an 18kt gold ring is 75 percent gold and 25 percent other metal. When white gold rings are made, they are usually coated with another metal, rhodium, to give it its silvery shine. Without rhodium, white gold rings have an off-white color that is slightly yellow in color without the shine of a yellow gold. Since the rhodium coating can wear off, white gold rings need to be serviced with new coatings periodically.

Platinum and other alloys

Although more expensive, platinum makes an ideal substitution to white gold. Unlike white gold rings, which are made of only 75 percent or less precious metal, platinum rings are usually 95 percent pure. Platinum is also stronger than gold and because it naturally gives off a silvery shine, it is unnecessary to plate it with rhodium and will keep its brilliance forever.

Besides white gold and platinum, there are other alloy metals being used for engagement rings and wedding bands. Titanium, with its ultra-light feel and metallic look, is being used more and more frequently. Also, alloys mixed with other metals to give off a range of colors can be used for a quirkier style.

Re: Anyone's FH want a platinum band?

I knew I could count on you girls to take my side. It's not even the money so much, it's just that this should be a decision b/w me and him. Not me, him, and his mom. Seriously. She even went to a jewelry store last week and looked at bands w/o us! Then she sent me pics of the bands she liked along with the business card of the store she went to. I almost blew a gasket!

FH found a band he loves online. It happens to be platinum, but I wonder if we could find it in white gold. My parents have a friend who is a jeweler so I was hoping to bring him the pic and see what he could find for us. We'll see...I just want FH to be happy. I don't care so much about the money b/c he will be wearing it for the rest of his life!

My DH has this platinum band.

I don't think his mother should be deciding his wedding band.

FH was going to get white gold, as was I, but we are now entertaining platinum for both because precious metals are the only thing with any worth anymore lol.

We decided against it because of cost, and because platinum scuffs up so quickly. My e-ring scuffs really easily, and is platinum. We're going with white gold for him.

yeah but they're only worth something if you sell them and that doesn't mean good things. . I say get a cheap ring that's never worth hocking!!!

actually we decided against platinum too just b/c the gold is a little sturdier and for the price difference it didn't seem worth it. our jeweler rec the gold

but i agree BUTT OUT FMIL

Re: Anyone's FH want a platinum band?

I think we're going to get my FH a platinum band since mine is going to be as well. Also, platinum is a really good option for someone with a lot of allergies (which we both have) since it's supposed to be super hypo-allergenic.

Get whatever you want, though, of course. I love something with a small pattern in it, but we have to go out and try some on before we pick something out for FH.
