Anything done at another event which you will not do??

Original post by BKtoLI

I bring this subject up because FH and I went to his cousin's bat mitzvah (sp?) and the DJ was so annoying that I wanted to scream. I kept telling my FH 'ok I now have a list of things I DON'T want the DJ to do!!'

Having been in 3 weddings, and been to a few more as a guest, I have now come up with the following list of things that will not be happening at my wedding, since I've seen it at other events and just thought, no way!!

1. Too loud DJ. I know if it's too loud, you're too old, but when you can't have a conversation with the person across from you without raising your voice, there's a problem.

2. No group dancing. This means no chicken dance, electric slide, etc.

3. No yelling at the people to get up and dance, why are they still sitting. Trust me, if you're a good DJ and playing the right music, you don't need to ask people to dance, they'll already be on the floor.

4. No 'The bride cuts the cake' song during the cake cutting. This just irks the hell out of me for some reason.

5. No telling the people to get up and dance when the food is just being served. I've seen 3 DJs do this. I just got my food, I want to eat, not have you yell at me to dance!

6. No 'singles' table. I saw this tonight and it looked like a matchmaking attempt or a place to put people that they didn't know where to put them.

7. No dais.

8. No dyed shoes to match the bridesmaid dress. Unless you get the shoes dyed black, chances are you'll never wear the shoes again. Especially if the dress is of the variety of the 'never wear again' kind. I'm telling my bridesmaids to just get silver strappy shoes, since they pretty much go with everything.

My list just keeps growing....

Anyone else have a list???

Can someone please get me up off the floor..because I can't get pass the 1985 wants their table back!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so with the no group dances...no bo-k toss and i noticed something at the last few weddings i've been to... the dj had all couples go on the dance floor..after a minute he said if you are dating under a year please leave the dance floor....if you are together no more than 7 yrs, please leave the dance floor...he gave out a few more numbers and then eventually the last standing couple were together the most years..40 or?? something...I thought it was annoying it was a great song and you were forced off the dance floor and then the dj is acknowledging a couple who weren't even close with the bride and groom....so I am not sure if this is something that is getting popular, but I will def. not be doing it.

On another note..i will def. have house music..i am a brooklyn girl and love all that cheesy stuff!!! Girl I'll house you,...Native Love..Yeh baby!!!!

By the way..love this thread! Am taking notes!

Absolutely no group dances

No bouquet/garter toss

No long winded speeches by everyone and their mother - I hate going to weddings where ten people make speeches - I want to dance!

All of those same DJ things you said. no group dances (except maybe the time warp), no gona lines, no annoying MC, etc.

Also, NO HORA! Doug is still trying to change my mind on this. But..ok, not No hora, but no chairs. I will not be raised up on a chair. The view from the ground is fine thank you very much!

I wasn't TOO keen on the idea and then I actually saw my first hora ever in person and they dropped the bride twice, and LAUNCHED her mother out of the chair so she landed on her back from quite a height. NO THANK YOU!

We're doing the bo-k and garter toss, but we're not going to make the person who catches the bo-k dance with the poerson who catches the garter..unless it's a couple..then we'll have them dance

OMG, my FI wants to do the Hora and I said ok. But now you have me scared that I'm tumble to the floor. Okay, I have to convince him not to do it now.

the hora is only the circle dance part and the chair lifting can be omitted. It is knda like doing a grapevine dance step and a kick of the leg at the end. If you have a chair lift get a lot of strong men and you an DF need a white napkin to hold between you when you are lifted. I don't wanna do it either, but we will do it too.

Right. we're still going to do the dance no chairs. I'm afiraid to do it at all thogh. Somethin about that dance makes people want to launch you up in a chair. What insane person thought that up!

Ok................

No group dances! Same here..no chicken dance, Macarena, Electric slide etc.

No garter/Bouquet toss. I just not interested. For me its something that takes away from a little extra dancing.

Uh, I think thats it.

i agree with my dress twin, but no conga line either!

This is what we are doing instead of the bo-k toss. It's called the longevity dance. We have a bet going as to whose side (mine or his) will win! I can't wait. We are going to 'cut-in' to dance with the last couple.

DONT'S
Not a lot of CH food - we paid for them to eat dinner.
No group dances - I am with you all on this but I may have to fight my step-daughters over this.
No garter toss.
No kissing to clanking forks or bells. We do not kiss on command. We just got married - I'm sure we'll kiss enough for everyone.
No parent dances - FH will ask my mom to dance but it won't be announced. I'll do the same for his dad.
No Drama - I'll can put this on the list and pray that the day goes smotthly.

Jenn darling, that insane tradition does have legitimate background. Traditionally, at that point in a Jewish wedding, the bride and groom are seen as royalty and are lifted above their guests to show their royalty over their 'court' so to speak. MANY catering halls own the special chairs with handles on the arms of the chairs and railings on the bottoms for a more secure dance experience. This is a pic of my brother in such a chair.

... and by the way he doesn't walk around with that dot on his face anymore. We told him he looked goofy.

I hear that girl. I might do the BoK toss only though.

I also hate when the bride and groom dance 'special' dances with their father, mother, and siblings-it's just too much!

I have to have chochcas though...my nephews and neices will be attending and they love the blow up sax's and lays etc.

LOL!

the BM at NRC told us they ahve special chairs with arms. Still I don't think it's a good idea. With my back if I get bumped to turned the wrong way it can literally put me in bed for weeks. I don't want to miss my honeymoon because somsone got carried away. Just the whole motion of the up and down is enought o mess me up.

No:

~ 'Bride cuts the cake song'...I think they'll know what I'm doing.

~ Group dances (macarena, YMCA, conga, etc...)

~ Full Dais table...I always thought it was uncomfortable for me.

~ bo-k/garter toss...I always hated the old ladies pushing me up to the dancefloor at the age of 13

~ Singles table...They did this to my brother. He was sitting with strangers who were single. My brother said 'Oh, now that she's married...she assumes we all should be!'. I agree with him.

~No blaring music during dinner

Mostly I want my guests to do what they want and have a great time!

Glad to know everyone likes this!!! And you ladies have me cracking up!! 1985 wants their table back!!

I thought of a few more things:

No forcing the bride and groom to dance like the DJ or MC in front of everyone. This isn't a dance lesson, it's my wedding. They did this to my brother, and while he was a good sport about it, it was painful to watch.

No singles BP or couples dances. The only dances we're doing is our first dance, me with my father and him with his mother, and that's it.

I'm debating on the Bo-K and garter toss only because we might have enough single people to warrant it. If there's less than 10 for either side, we're not bothering.

No giveaways either. They're cheesy, unneccesary, end up in the trash, although I have to admit it is hilarious to see a balding 65 year old guy with a fuzzy headband and antennas.

No conga line, which means Hot Hot Hot will not be played.

Ditto on the house music, even though I'm a Brooklyn girl at heart (only moved here in August) my FH is against the house music. I'll reserve the house music for my bachelorette party!!

Same for no ghetto rap music.

I don't care for 'gifts' the guest take home, (Almond candies no one ever eats) they can take the evening memories home with them and enjoy the photos uploaded on snapfish.com

Now you have me nervous about the Hora and falling out of that chair, His mother wants it and I could care less. My mother said if we have a Hora for his family then we should have a traditional dance for our family as well! What the heck? I have to train my BM to dance La Plena (Puerto Rican Folk Dance), what Salsa not good enough???

NO SCATTERED ROSE PETALS.
I just don't like 'em. I know so many people use them, they're just not for me. :)

I'm not lighting the unity candle at my ceremony.
My family usually has a band that play half Italian music/half American (or almost all Italian) music. We're only having two Italian songs played.
