its never happened to me (I don't have a Windows operating system) but it DID happen to my FH.

He uninstalled that AIM, and downloaded again from the AIM site. Problem was solved.

It totally baffles me how people can actually click on stuff like this. 'There are pictures of you on the internet... CLICK HERE'.

I mean COME ON.

But anyways if people want to bomb out their home PCs thats fine. But its the people with the home PCs that are sending these virus IMs to people at my job.

I have at least 10-15 people at my job that got this and its causing quite the headache to my help desk team.

I sent out an email to the entire company yesterday saying if anyone is dumb enough to click this and they become infected... we will revoke their computer privledges. Which pretty much means we will lock them out of their PC so they wont be able to run any personal software, install anything, or customize their computer in any such way. They pretty much get the tools they need to do their job... and thats it.

We aren't kidding around anymore.

SO because it came from her friend... that means its always OK to click?

Has it ever occured to you that most of the email viruses that people get... actually come from email addresses that people KNOW?

Its a shame that the virus writers are a lot smarter than the people that click these links.

People are used to not clicking things via email.

IM virus' are fairly new to the general population.

Your same IT manager would also get fired when some idiot at the job launches one of these viruses... takes out the entire file server... wipes out all the client data... and then the CEO asks why this wasn't prevented?

Ask around on this site... how many girls on here have PCs that are 'locked down' in some way (either internet access or email).

We are very lax at my job... but people are just getting out of control.

I am not here to be big brother. If people want to fool around browsing LIW at their job or chatting on AIM thats one thing. But don't do things like launch viruses that will impact my job and network security.

And like I said... if people want to do this on their home PCs and bomb them out... knock yourself out.

But when people are doing this at the workplace... different story.

No my CEO would understand people are people and people make mistakes.
What the CEO wouldn't understand is why the file server wasn't backed up on a seperate server (non employee accessed) so that the client data was spared.

No but my post was simply a warning to a lot of people on here that DO run IM at work. I know my company is not the only one that takes stuff like this seriously.

In fact... 90% of companies make you sign some sort of computer policy disclosure that you don't even realize you are signing that lists the rules liks this.

God help the person... at ANY company... that launches a virus while running a program at the job that they shouldnt be running in the first place that wipes out the company data.

Think the CEO is going to be so forgiving when he loses a couple million in business thanks to something like this? I think not. If its a private company the owner would have his head. If it was a public one... the shareholders would have him canned after they see their stocks drop significantly after news of lost business.

Re: AOL IM Virus

The boss at my company wants to shut down the AOL port at the firewall that will turn off AOL for everyone.

But I think thats a little too harsh. The people that launch these things are the ones that should be dealt with.
