Apartment hunting questions
In the midst of all the wedding planning we now have to find a place to live! We both live at home and neither of us have had to go through this before, so I just have two questions.... 1. Our date is 7/27/01 and we would probably need it for June 15th. We're looking for a one bedroom somewhere in the area of Eastern Nassau and Western Suffolk, no further east than Commack and no further west than Plainview. I called some realtors; some have said that we're really early and others have said otherwise, but none of them have anything now. As I'm waiting for then to get back to me (I called 4) should I continue to look, or is it really too soon? 2. Also, we've been looking at bedroom furniture and all the stores say 8-10 weeks. When we said we may not even have the apartment by the time we'd have to order it, we were told that people do that all the time. Is it normal to order furniture before you know how much room you have? I know the kitchen table and the living room couch would have to wait, but a bedroom set's pretty standard, so that should be ok, right? Any advice in general? Thanks!

I think its too soon to look. Apts go so fast in the market. Most are gone the same week they advertise. I would wait. Bedroom furniture could be a problem too. If you're going to get a complet set, some pieces may not fit. Although, if you don't plan on renting forever, you should get what you want and worry about it later. Maybe your parents could hold onto any thing that doesn't fit. We found a problem with the end tables only. We may only be able to fit one.

Re: Bedroom furniture - it depends in part on what size bed you want. We want a King Size and a lot of the older houses we've looked at don't have a big enough master bedroom. Some of them are barely big enough for a Queen size and you'd have trouble fitting a night table at each side. You might want to pick out what you think you'd use for a guest room, if you expect to buy a house within the next few years. Then you can move this bed into the spare room and select something new suited to a new home.

I also advise holding off on the bedroom set. My fiance and I recently moved into an apartment with a large bedroom. We then choose our bedroom set with that large bedroom in mind. We ordered it, THEN realized that the model we looked at was queen sized, and we ordered king. Now we have to put part of our set in storage until we move into a house because the whole thing won't fit. It's not a huge deal, but it is a bit of a problem having different pieces delivered to different locations.

OK, I still live up in Buffalo but we went through the whole apartment search twice already. I would say that it isn't too early to look at commercial places but it is too early to look at private places. I prefer to rent from a commerical place because I usually find there are less problems...that and many have a name for themselves already. As for furniture, we ordered after we knew the place we were moving in to but already had ideas of a couple of different of sets according to size. I would have to recommend www.homeproperties.com to look for an apartment near you. I rent from them and they are a great place to rent from and you can read their pledge to you and see why. I do not work for them, just a renter and have been more than pleased with them. I know they do have apts on LI because we thought of moving there last year, but it is too expensive to live for us at the present time. Good luck. Nancy

Depending on what type of apt. you want to rent. My FI and I used to live in the Harbor Club in West Babylon..there they have a list you get on for when apts. become available, so it's not too soon for some place like that. You can always purchase stuff for the apt. and schedule delivery for after you move in. We have done that several times. Most places are accommodating with delivery dates (especially if you want them later rather than sooner.)

Apartment hunting questions for Jenn P
Hi! I am getting married in the beginning of May and I am moving out of my 1 bedroom apt. It's really nice and in an apartment complex (2nd floor), just off the sevice road of exit 57 of the LIE. It's so convient to major roads and shopping stores, you just pull out of the driveway and boom you're on the service road in Hauppauge. If you are interested let me know and I can give you more details about the place!!!! If we could fit all our stuff in the 1 bedroom apt we would've stayed! By the way the bedroom is really big too but I have way too much stuff LOL. Let me know

Well if so if you come out the complex and make a right on the service road of LIE and go through 1 light over Vets Hgwy Friday's will be on your right. Yes there is parking but not assigned spots per apt. IF you are interested I'll tell you more details!!!

Furniture!!
Well, this is my expertise! Like everyone said, be careful about buying furniture before you get an apt...room sizes can vary greatly. I can fit a king size bed, 2 nightstands, dresser, armoire, and a chest with room to spare, but in by old apt. a queen size bed and dresser were a tight fit! I work for Seamans, and most stuff can be delivered within 2 weeks, so don't stress! It can be done!

Apartments
Hi Jenn and everyone, I am in the same position..I am not getting married till April of next year but my fiance and I are moving in together when his lease is up in May. We have been apartment hunting for the past 2 months. Let me just say this there are a lot of aprtment complexes in the long island area..especially Suffolk County..where we are looking..most of them are owned by the same people..like Heatherwood and someone mentioned Home Properties...most likely my fiance and I will be moving into the Lake Grove Apts..which is owned by home properties...but it is a process...apartments come and go..one two three...I am in the same position as far as furnitture too..I heard that bedroom sets can take like 2 months to come...but some stores say if its in stock it can take like a week or two. But again I don't want to buy furniture until I know what can fit in the apt..its hard enough planning a wedding but finding an apt. is just as hard. Good Luck to u all! Allison

Thank you very much for letting me know about the apartment, unfortunately I work in Port Washington and that would be too much of a ride for me. Pat works out east so we discussed it, and our compromise was that we wouldn't go further east than approximately exit 52. But thanks anyway and good luck with everything!
