We have been living in our apartment for just over 2 years, we do NOT get along with the people who live in the apartment below us - we haven't had any incidents up until like a month ago, when the husband and wife practically attacked me and I called the cops on them (long story over a newspaper ) - Well we got a phone call yesterday morning from the woman at the rental office saying that there was a complaint put in for us being loud between the hours of 8pm-10pm and waking up the kids downstairs.
Quiet hours don't start until 10pm - I don't see where the problem is - but apparently, when you live in an apartment you cannot 'impose upon anyones enjoyment - no annoying noises or smells' - I explained to the woman that we keep the second bedroom (above the kids' bedroom) closed so the cats dont run around in there - to try and keep the noise down for the kids. Well apparently, the mother downstairs works until 2-3am and the kids sleep on the living room floor starting at 8pm until she gets home from work.....
The kids are constantly crying downstairs, slamming doors, the husband and wife are always fighting, its almost unbearable. They slam doors at 2 or 3 am like you have no idea. We have let it go in the past, but now I think its becomming a problem.
We spend our time in 'the common area' the living room when we are home at night, watching TV, playing Wii, when we have people over. Well as I come to find out, that no matter what time it is, we have to be quiet because it was 'impose upon their enjoyment' to hear us walking around upstairs.
I don't know what to do to handle this, part of me wants to be that snarky wench that everytime the kids cry, to just call the cops and tell them 'they are crying alot - maybe they are beating them... - its imposing upon my enjoyment to hear them crying all the time, and the slamming of the doors in the middle of the night. I am just at a loss of what to do.. And the best part, I am switching to nights in a few weeks, 7p-7a - so they best be quiet ALL day long when I have to sleep... I would hate to have them wake me up...... Thanks for making it this far if you have....

I remember your post about the newspaper incident a few weeks ago. I am sorry you are still going through this. It is ridiculous! Can you possibly move? Maybe to another apartment in the complex? Assuming it is a big complex...

We are out of here Oct 31st - in the process of house hunting... Its a huge complex - but I dont know if they are going to be receptive to us moving into a new apartment with only a few months left...

Hows about a rug if you have wood floors? I have a thick pad under mine to protect the guy downstairs....Unfortch this is the not so fun part of apartment living.
I reported the guy upstairs from me, but HE HAS A TREADMILL IN HIS APARTMENT WITH WOOD FLOORS!!!!!!

We have wall to wall carpet in the entire apartment. The best thing is - I am home ALONE every night from 8pm-9:45ishpm - and I am ALWAYS in slippers.. so W T F

Oh girl i know what your going through!!!!!!!!!!! The people above me have kids that SCREAMMM and slam doors and cry like you wouldnt believe. (for a min i thought they were being abused by how much they would cry). Its annoying and it *****.

Yea thats going to be the game plan - I think I am going to make that complaint even if they shut their front door too loud.. I find that 'it imposes upon my enjoyment'....

Its very true. You can report someone for whatever.
Sigh. I have no advice other than, try to be quiet and let it blow over. :(

Unfortunately, you now must fight fire with fire. I would call the rental office and complain each time you hear a peep from these people. It's important that you follow up each phone call in writing. If it's the middle of the night and they're screaming, call the cops. If they slam doors in the middle of the night, call the cops and say you heard a loud noise.
I have wall to wall in my apartment and live upstairs. I very rarely hear the people below me and I've never had a noise complaint made against me in the 9 years I've lived here.
You have to play dirty with this people.

I would def suck it up then and just wait til October.

This is a very tough and annoying situation. I think if you start calling the rental office to report every little noise that they make, it will just be adding fuel to the fire.
Do you have a video camera? Maybe when they're being noisy, record it for a bit on the camera. Then, you can go to the rental office manager and play it for him/her. Maybe then they'd be willing to let you switch to another apartment.
