Thanks Betty - Thats what I thought. I never understood the 'guaranteed to appraise for x over purchase price' hype that some jewlers advertise. The value is actually determined by the certification. The appraisal should follow the certification value but the appraisal value it is totally in the the eyes and skill of the appraiser.

Re: Appraisals......
I would recommend going to International Gemological Institute (IGI). They are located on 47th St. between Madison & 5th Ave. but closer to 5th. (don't remember their exact address anymore)Their phone # is 212-753-7100. You can also check their website www.igiworldwide.com. I used to work for a wholesale jewelry company and we send all our jewelry there to be appraised. Plus, if you have your ring appraised there, the certificate that they will give you has a certificate # and if you ever need to have your appraisal updated say 2 years from now, (i think you will need an updated one if you ever change insurance company) you can just call them and give them your certificate #, they will retrieve the information and give you a new certificate for a fee of I believe $25.00.
Good Luck!!!

Re: Appraisals......
Hi all,
I am an insurance agent. When we schedule jewelry we tend to go with the purchase price. The thought behind this is that if you loose it we can generally replace it for what you paid. we work with distributors and can get the lower price. Appraisals tend to be a lot higher.
I do have a tip for you...make sure that your appraisal has the cut, color and clarity of each stone.. If there are any gems make sure it includes the depth of color. If there is a loss you want to make it is replaced exactly...
if anyone has any questions, please feel free to email me..

Re: Appraisals......
no appt needed. appraisals depends on how much your ring appraises for.

Re: Appraisals......
Do you still need an appraisal if you have a certified stone

Re: Appraisals......
Stacey1403 that is what I don't get, why get a ring appraised if you already have a ceritified stone by EGL/GIA, what is the purpose of that, it seems rather redundant IMO

Re: Appraisals......
You need to have the ring appraised if you are getting it insured. The insurance company needs an appraisal certificate plus they need to know that your stone is certified hence GIA/the other association that gives certificates. The GIA certificate states only what the stone has: inclusions, the color, clarity, the depth and width... The GIA cert is kind of like a birth certificate for the diamond. The appraisal gives the ring monetary value. That is the figure the insurance uses to make up a premium rate for you. Using whatever calculations they use. Most insurance companies work this way. However there are some exceptions. The main reason people insure jewelry is if anything happens to it, the insurance covers the damage for a reasonable amount. I was real anal about getting my ring insured. God forbid anything happened to it while it wasn't.

Re: Appraisals......
I just got my ring appraised at Macy's and I am so happy that I did I can now go to get it insured. When I called the insurance companies, they ALL said I needed it appraised. Now I will have some peace of mind

Re: Appraisals......
I am looking for a good appraiser on long island. Has anyone had any experiences with one? I just don't trust anyone. I also don't want the ring to leave my sight.
