Apt, house or apt building

I hope Im not being too personal, and if I am I apologize but DH and I, unfort. are not able to buy a house of our own right now and are currently looking for an apt. It just made me curious as to what the other LI Wedding Brides living accomodations are with their FH or DH? House? Apt? AptBuilding? COndo, etc.

***If you are in a complex would you mind telling me which one...thats is if you recommend them TIA

FH and i just got an apartment in a complex in Nassau. i wasn't comfortable living in someone else's house - i liked the idea of signing a lease agreement and being legal and everything. it's totally a personal choice!!

DH and I were able to buy a house with the help of our parents.

we are in the same boat ... have you thought about a coop? we have looked at soooo many apts. in nassau and a few in suffolk, UGH

recently we started looking at coops in suffolk and when you add what the mortgage and maintenance would be per month - it just about equals the rent for an apt!

the great part about the coop is building equity!

what are you looking to spend per month? FM me, ill let you know of a few good places, either apts or coops

edited to say::
we also looked at condos and townhomes but they are just as expensive as buying a house

We live in an apt complex too. We are nowhere near being able to afford a house so this will have to do!

FH and I bought a house last March, it was a bit of a stretch financially, but it has been so worth it !

Good Luck!

we bought a house.

If I was going to rent, id rather be in a building than someones house.

We live in a two-family house, signed a lease and are 'legal and everything.' It's a legal two-family house - I checked.

It's what you're comfortable with and what you prefer. If you live above your landlords and you hate them, it doesn't work out so well. FH and I are almost never home and we don't have an apartment big enough to entertain many people in. We are extremely quiet, as are our landlords. We get along great, hardly ever see each other, etc. They are very friendly. My cousin had a similar experience in a two family house. My brother had an awful experience with very nosey and obnoxious landlords in a two family house - they were stealing his mail!

It's a personal preference. We looked at two-family houses and apartment buildings when we were looking. (We used to live in the Crystal House in Long Beach. It was okay - overpriced for what it was, but the apartments were huge and there was tons of closet space. Neighbors could be very lound, which got very annoying very fast, considering we work long hours) This apatment was just the right price and the right location, so we went with it. We're looking to buy now, but probably won't for another 6 months or so.

Whatever you do, DO NOT move into an illegal apartment. If it gets reported, you can be booted almost instantly!!

Good luck. Just start looking around and see what's out there. You'll get a better idea of what you can get in your price range and also a better idea of what you prefer. Good luck - I'm sure you'll find a great place!

Re: Apt, house or apt building

when we lived together on LI we rented 2 illegal basement apartments over the course of 2 years. 1 the landlord was crazy and snooped in our apartment any chance she got (we eventually caught on and changed the locks) and the second was a bad experience as well (DH swears to this day that it was haunted, no joke). anyways, we now live in an apartment complex in charlotte, NC which we love so much better than living in someone else's house. if you look into apartment coplexes, check out this apartment rating site good luck in your search!

We're in an apartment complex, a Fairfield, right now. We're planning to buy a house, but we're in no big rush, as the market seems to be changing to a buyer's market, and we like our apartment well enough. We got this apartment when we moved in together a year and a half ago.

Re: Apt, house or apt building

I have been in the same apt since right before I had my DD. It is in my stepmothers house. FH moved in around Jan. We are not sure what we are doing after the wedding, my stepmom wants to sell the house and moved to FLA. I don't think FH and I can afford what she wants to sell the house for. We might move into the apt in FMIL's house and stay there for a year to save for a house. I just don't want to even think about it till after the wedding.

What area are you looking in?

Re: Apt, house or apt building

I dont know. I kind of wanted to find something that we would be happy in, worst case, in case we end up being there for the next few years . I dont want to have to worry about moving around every 6-12 mo.
I have a VERY large dog which is kind of the problem. I swear Im not just saying this but he is AWESOME!!!! Very well behaved. Doesnt bark (unless we are playing and are instigating it ) no mistakes...hes a big mush.

DH and I rented until we got married and then started looking to buy a house. We are now homeowners.
I don't know where you live, but if you are close to Miller Place, there is a really beautiful apartment complex in Holbrook right off of Nichols Rd.
I have friends that live there and they love it. Let me know if you are interested in details.

ETA: They are pet friendly which I know for you is a plus.

We will be renters come December. We are fortunate to be living in an apartment within a family member's home so we can save for our house.

You'll find something!

We just bought a house. The only reason we were able to afford it was b/c both me and FH lived at home until now. While most of our friends were paying rent, we were able to save.

sorry - i didn't mean to imply anything!! i should have mentioned that the apartments in homes that we liked were waaaay over our budget - it was the illegal ones that we could afford!
